Since fuel prices have gone nuts, I thought I had better change my driving habits.
1. Slowed down to 55mph on the highway.
2. Short-shift; 10mph in second, 20mph in third...and so on.
3. Get into 5th gear at 40mph; 35mph if I'm cruising around town and not lugging the engine.
4. Coast in neutral early when approaching a red light or stop sign.
5. Shhhhhh......coast going down long grades on the highway.
By doing these things, my last fill-up I calculated 29.8mpg. The Info Center reported 30.1mpg average so it's pretty damn close. The trip odometer showed 480.9 miles when the Info Center showed 1.6 gallons remaining in the tank. 500 miles was definitely within reach.
Yes, I had to get used to tractor trailer rigs blowing by me, but I got used to it. I've also noticed that I hardly brake for traffic on the highway anymore because I'm going slow enough to avoid driving in huge packs of cars.
