Yup, you've heard it right! And this is no BS either. I've found a company overseas that's willing to make custom clear taillights for the G2 Coupes (sedans will follow shortly depending on the interest). This time it will be different from all other attempts someones tried to get custom lenses made. I actually have sample products made and you actually have options too! That's right! Coupe owners have 3 options to choose from:

Red Bottom w/Clear Top
Red Bottom, Clear Top w/Red Surround Border
All Clear

Pricing willl be around $200 - $250 for a set of lenses (depending on the interest). I am testing waters now to see if there are enough interest to get a mass number produced. Meanwhile, the company is nice enough to produce me a few examples of their products with 3 of my specific choices I've given them. I've been doing alot of research on these tail lights and these seems to be the most popular. Since these are only examples, they are actually "first production prototypes" meaning they're all custom made. Fitment is ok, but not great. I've test fitted all of these and they seem to be ok. There are no clip-on tabs at the edges and some corners are cut a little too short (nothing a little extra silicone sealant couldn't help). Also on the clear edges, there are what looks to be clear water or plastic spot blemishes visible (see pics). They're not that noticeable once installed.

With that being said, I am selling these for $200 shipped a pair of lenses +Paypal fees. If I sell all of these and see a great number of interests, then I will ask them to actually make a mold for these to get them mass produced. Now, if a mold was to be made, then the price will have to jump up a little to cover the cost of the molds. And as some of you know, molds are very expensive to make. I will try my best to keep the price under $250 for a set if we happen to go that route. But also keep in mind that products made from molds will be as close to OEM quality as possible. You will get what you paid for.

NOTE: This is for the lenses ONLY. You will have to use your stock housings.

I have not had a chance to fully test these out but I can assure you that they are not crap. I've compared these to the factory lenses and they are about the same in thickness. They are hard and seems pretty sturdy. The factory lenses can withstand oven temperatures up to 200 degrees so I'm guessing these should be able to come pretty close. Your light bulbs are recessed pretty far back in the housing so don't worry about them melting the lenses. Plus I don't think the light bulbs can reach near 200 degrees in heat right?

Here's an Update:

GOOD NEWS. I've finally heard back from my contact guy overseas. He received the tail light donors in good shape. Also he's finally located a shop that's willing to do Injection Molds. Quality will be close to factory or if not better. Now, only problem is, pricing is going to be a little bit higher just as I anticipated for Injection Molding. $250 for a set of sedans and coupes. Coupes will be red bottom, clear top (by popular demand). Sedans will be red/clear/red. For those who want all clears, I'm still trying to negotiate for that small number to be manufactured. These guys want a large enough order for them to even start the developing process. For that, I'll be placing an order of 200. 100 for sedan, and 100 for coupes. Like I mentioned before, this is not a traditional group buy. (I can't imagine how long it'll take to get all 200 payments in). If we decided to go with the injection mold process, then production time should take about 3 months.

Second option we have is going with the hand made process (like the prototypes in shown in the first post). With this process we can have more of a made-to-order fashion. Those who want all clears will get all clears. Those who want red borders on the coupes shall have theirs and so forth. Pricing for those will be $200 shipped. Only problem is .. quality is questionable. Fitment is also another concern (I would say about 95-99% good fitment). And then cracking and fading concerns. (Not to diss the prototypes in any way). I still have confidence this those. Those who already purchased the Prototypes feel free to chime in.

Also keep in mind that hand made ones can start producing it as soon as they get the GO. However, It's not going to be a 100% faster than Injection molding. It would take about 1 pair to make per day. So... 30 days = 30 pairs. So you're looking at at least a month before you can get your hands on a set. They won't ship them out til they have like at least 30- or 40 sets completed (cut the cost of shipping). The ones who ordered last will have to wait til the next batch is finished.

I know I can't start another Poll on this thread, but give me your inputs on what you'd like to see happen. Unfortunately, we can't go with both options so post your votes.

Here's a list of people that have voted or shown some interest in this group buy. If your name is not on the list, then please let me know. If you are ON the list and would like to be removed, please let me know as well. No hard feelings here. If you are on the list and have a question mark (?) next to your name, that means I wasn't sure if you're 100% in or not. Please confirm. If you're on the Sedan or Coupe ?? :dunno: list, Please confirm if you have a Sedan or Coupe since I can't tell which vehicle you have.

You will have to remove your factory lenses and replace them with these. There are 2 methods that you can use. Either the oven method or a heat gun would do the trick. I can send you a brief DIY if you need one. I'm also offering an installation service for a fee of $50 shipped. All you have to do is ship your tail lights to me and they'll come back to you ready to install back on your car.

Ok, a little update.

After careful consideration, my business partner decided that it might be wise to only create 1 mold first to really test out the quality of these lenses. After all, all we heard from the company was "yea, sure we can make these tail lights." We wanted to be 100% sure that they CAN deliver and that the quality is no less than exceptional. Rather than nosediving first and dumping loads of cash into making 4 molds at one time, we're only going to make 1 first. Since the coupes show a more promising demand, elected to produce the Coupe tail light (driver or passenger side) first. We'll run a sample of 10 production lenses first. After having them shipped over here and I inspect and test fit each and every one, then we can give it a GO for the rest.

I'm sorry for this little delay, but I think it is out of the best interest for us right now. Money is really hard to come by and we must spend it wisely. Hopefully this should only take about another month or so to do.

Added.

I'd be in for a pair of clears for a coupe if you could get them. One question, if I send you my lights can you black the chrome out when installing the new lenses?
Would that be red/clear or All Clear? Sure I can black out the chrome. How much do you want to black out? All or just some with some areas remaining chrome like blacked out headlights?

#33 ·
If you blacked out everything, then even though you have red or yellow lights, It won't be that effective when on. More than likely, you will only see red or yellow dots from afar. This could be hazardous. Also, what are you going to do about red reflectors? You need red reflectors either on the tail lights or on the body of the car. Otherwise, the tail lights would be super illegal.

It's not my business to tell you what to do but I'm just concerned that after you get the tail lights and they're not compliant and then you're not happy in the end.

Good points! I guess I'll have to experiment a bit and see which is more effective, a slight tint on a normal lense or a complete black out of the chrome with a clear lense. I was thinking of putting in LED style lights so that would help with illumination issues (I hope).

#37 ·
No offense but I think your over charging simply because no one else offers these. It's all part of free trade but just thought I'd offer my $.10 And from what I can gather on this board so far group buys go like this... Lots and lots of interests and demands but when it comes time to pay up, the person fronting the $$ gets the shaft. Other than that good luck with the sales. They look really nice.
