Just got a set of Toyo Proxy 4's due to the rave reviews and decided to go with a 225 width instead of 215. Now I just drove about 800 miles this weekend so I had a good chance to test them out and I am kinda disappointed with the mooshy sidewall feel I am getting right now at highway speeds. I know some of is may just be due to the characteristics of the tire but I never heard anything bad about these tires having a weak sidewall. So the only thing I can think of is the extra width is making them sloppy so to speak. I took the psi from 35 up to about 41 and they feel a little better but still not as responsive as I would like. Does anyone have any suggestions for me on this how high can I safely take the pressure and will I gain anything from this. They are listed max psi 50.

225 is way big...

Here's how i normally break it down. 215 is always going to be a 7.5" wide wheel. Optimised.

205 would be round about 6.5

225 is for 8" wide...8.5 is starting to get too big for 225. so 235 would be best for 8.5" (if you like that standard/chubby tire look) If you like stretch then 215 is perfect for 8.5 wide.

9 is going to be 245

10 is 275.

If you wheel is 8" wide. 215 or 225 will be best

if you're 7-7.5. Don't go over 215

did you get 225/55 or 225/50?

I had 225/50's on my coupe (I think those are the ones still on there) and they were fine but I ran OEM pressures of 32F/30R I don't know how you can ride on 40psi....maybe your roads are better

Toyos are a soft tire. If you wanted a harder sidewall I would've went Michelin or Continental.
 
I'm currently rolling on 225/45/17 40psi. The ride is firm and comfortable, maybe the 50 series height is a bit too soft. The higher the profile, you're gonna get a type of bounce.

The maxima is running 225/50/17 and they do give a floaty ride, but then again the stock suspension gives that effect too.

They are 225/50/16. I guess I'm stuck with them I don't know what else I can do besides live with them or pay for a new set then try and sell the old ones on eBay. Only got about 1200 miles on them this is disappointing, but they feel wonderful in the city just a bit soft feeling in the corners. Maybe if I upgrade my front sway bar might help until these wear out. Did we ever get a front sway made for the legend?? I have the rear one but I was kinda out of the scene for awhile I saw a few people talking about a front one.
 
I got 225/40 on my 18's they rub on the rear when ever I hit deep bumps on the freeway or when there's people in the back.
 
you guys will notices a huge difference in the tire's grip around corners if you go too big on the tread.

Wheelhop and I had this discussion. oversized tires have less grip/response when they are asked to maneuver.

Take a look at the rear tire...that happens when you get too wide of a tire on your narrow wheels...your tire loses almost 1/4th the contact patch, let alone all of the shifting the tire does BEFORE it actually turns the car...This is the phenomenon that Roger is talking about. "soft feeling" in the corner.

It's good for straight line but in a corner, your car will handle worse. Also, i have first hand experience with this...i stepped from 205 to 225 in the rear of my volvo...I stopped spinning tires as bad in the rain, but in the dry, my car was extremely tail happy.

I say all of this to say, it's a bad Idea to step up 2 sizes in tires with standard wheels.
 
/ what he said? 225/50? and its mushy? mine are 225/50 and i dont think they are mushy. i did always run mine upwards of 40-45psi

why are you guys running such high pressures in such high sidewall tires? 50 series tire with 45 PSI? 45 with 40?:confused:

you guys are probably over inflating the tire to cover up the natural tendency of the tire to be sloppy, but all you're doing is removing contact patch from the road. by being over inflated.

Road pressures should be 38...at MOST. In my 19s i keep it around 32-35psi. most radials have a MAX pressure holding capability of 50psi...
 
Why not go with Honda's suggested tire size when you're rolling stock wheels? I don't understand why you wouldn't. It's not like Honda didn't test a few tire sizes and find out which one handled the best.
highly dought they tested whihc tire was better, more like they signed a contract with a tire company, then picked one they liked the best if they even had a choice.

just cuz honda put it on doesn't mean its best.

hows a 225 tire 2 sizes up?

i ran mine at 40psi+ for autoX always, and kept it for the street.
 
You right Alex, the standard Michellins from Honda were different tire type. HOnda chose the 215 because that particular Michellin worked best with a 6.5" wide wheel.

That said, however, the optimum size for 6.5 is 205.especially with sidewalls in the range of 55 to 50.

Now from memory, the GS wheel is 16x6.5. If it's 16x7, then that's something totally different. but if it is infact 16x6.5, you should only step to a 215. going to 225 is too big for a 6.5" wide wheel.

I just ran to tire rack for a tire ...just a random tire picked with the 225 50 size.

You see the actual measured distance bead to bead is 7" on a 225 tire. The section width is 9 inches...that's 3" BIGGER than the rim itself (look at the picture Wheelhop made again.)

That's a fat tire for a 6.5" wide wheel...

I have 16x6.5 wheels on my volvo. As i said, stepping to a 225 made it REALLY unpredictable. the standard size was 205/55. I've had 205 55 205 50 and 215/55s on it in adition to the 225s...Really, the 205 is the only tire that handles halfway decently. but I had to buy some REALLY sticky 205s for them not to be overpowered when the pavement got slick.

EDIT:

i was looking for some sticky tires earlier this year. I figured i was going to sneak some of you guys on the AutoX at NALM with some a048s or something on my stock 16s. My stock 16s from my RL are 16x7.5 i think. maybe 16x7. i was going to stick with the stock width(225/[50]-16) because it doesn't matter how much tread you have if the tread is being pulled away from the road...

Now your extreme pressures are probably the only thing keeping your tire from acting like it should. But that high level of pressure is bad for tire wear, and for tire strength over time.
 
toyotires.com lists a 6.5" width wheels exceptable on a 225/50 tire. 6.0-8.0 is their listing. yes 7.0 wheel is optimal.

i kno the pic wheelhop made, if he made it :p, looks exactly like the pics from my "handling" books i bought when i was youngin. haha jk. i understand all this very well, just never felt it actually make the cornering worse when i switched.


roger, if u don't like it, idk why, or what u are used to, i don't get the same feeling u do with my 225's. the tire is still on the exceptable range of tiree for our cars according to the tire manufactures. different strokes for different folks i guess, i'm sure you'll find someone to sell them too if u get new tires.
 
He's used to direct handling if he can actually feel the difference in the tire.

If you're used to sloppy handling, you wont notice a change in it. I hate lag in steering response, and why run unsafe/unwise pressures in your tires when you don't have to.

Recommended pressure is 32-35...only in HIGH LOAD applications (i.e temprorary weight addition, like luggage and people, or towing) do you go to 40+psi.

I'm not digging at you alex...i re-read that and it sounds like I am, but i'm not. But i've been messing with this stuff since i was like 16...and learning about it since i could read.
 
Ya I definitely notice the difference, now the question is do I want to spend another 485 dollars for the right size then try and sell these, lol damn this sucks.
Where'd you get them from? I know when i bought a set of bastard tires from Firestone, i was given an option to bring the tires back within 30 days.

I had them for all of 2 weeks before i realized (too late) that they sucked in the rain...

tires broke loose coming up an on ramp. the LSD kept unlocking and locking so i couldn't get it to stop sliding. so i just gassed it up and drifted up the on ramp. only to find rush hour traffic stopped...so i just spun it around in the merge lane and tapped the guard rail ever so slightly (it was one of those super HIGH guard rails so it didn't hit the bumper..it hit ALL my lights and grill :lol:.

Went back raised hell because i was told they were good tires by the sales guy. since they didn't have what i was looking for, they sold me on those pieces of crap.

I went to the used tire place, bought some 30 dollar dunlops (Matched set, i got lucky) and had that Firestone mount and balance all my tires and give me my 400 bucks back.
