Discovery: My Legends have interchangeable keys!

I found out that my Legend coupe and my Legend GS can be unlocked with the same key.

I had to swap the coupe into the garage tonight so I could install some new underhood insulation (the previous insulation had been ripped by a couple of high-speed pressure washers back in the day). I had both sets of car keys in my pocket and randomly decided to try the GS key in the coupe trunk. It opened. I tried the coupe door, and it opened too. I tried the ignition and it almost worked. Then I tried the coupe keys in the GS, and it was the same -- trunk and doors opened, ignition wouldn't start.

I have heard of Legend keys being fairly universal - especially when the tumblers inside the door are worn with age. I remember one of the first Legend meets I went to was in Vegas, and a member here who will remain unnamed locked his keys in his G2 with the engine running. Another member with a G2 went up and opened the door with his key. I was amazed that a key to a separate car was able to open the door.

Now I am seeing that it's probably quite common. Now every time I see a Legend in a parking lot, I'm going to have to fight the urge to see if my key unlocks the door. :giggle:

It would be kind of sweet actually if both cars would start with the same key, but I suppose it's probably a good thing they don't -- otherwise I'd be mixing up the keys and fobs all the time.

Here's video proof; horrible footage because it's dark so I was balancing a flashlight and the camera in the same hand while unlocking with the other. Please excuse the disaster in the garage; most of the junk isn't mine. You can see my old underhood insulation there that's going to the dumpster.

Mint brand new insulation ($79 at the dealer, comes with all the clips):

Interesting. The 2 GS's don't play that way, but of course one is an early '94 and one is a late '94, so maybe that's why.
Yeah I think one of mine is 10/93 and the other is 11/93 production date.
that would be approx 1:250 (2^8).
Even if it is a 1 in 250 chance that my keys can be swapped, it's pretty ironic that I happened to buy two of the Legends that fit that scenario. lol

You'll see me at the National Meet trying everyone's locks. j/k

looks like ill have to try to find a JDM legend with Laser Cut keys so i dont have to walk out one day and find tyson trying to open my doors :p I tried this amongst Blackbird and the coupe, but it didnt work, but then again one is an early 94 and the other is a late 95.

both of mine are 94's GS and L I have to go try this now.

Great I can see it now; in a mall parking lot...." No, officer I promise I wasn't trying to steal this car I just wanted to see if my keys would work on it."

it's not as much about the year of the car as the shape of the keys.

a legend lock has, what, 8 pins in the lock? in essence as combinations along with about 3 heights for each ridge.

3^8 = 6561 combinations. for an exact fit, then you have a 1:6560 chance of having a match. for an *almost* fit, then it's probably more like 2 positions for each of the 8 pins for it to *almost* work 100% on a worn lock. that would be approx 1:250 (2^8).

That's really funny that they're that close. We used to rotate through 3 Legends (2 '95s and a '92) and none of them could do that. I ought to try it again now that they're surely a little more worn down though both Legends have had keyless entry systems in them so I imagine the tumblers aren't that bad (despite the fact that dad's clicker has been dead for several months and he refuses to swap to his secondary one which works just fine... wth is wrong with him? I have no idea).

There was actually a court case my mom told me about when I was growing up and trying to figure out how keys worked (way, way long ago obviously) where two next door neighbors both had the same accord. One of the neighbors lent their car to a friend (with written agreement and such, really a careful arrangement apparently). The friend came and picked up the car and was driving it around and all.

Neighbor 2 meanwhile, reports his car stolen.

Turns out, the two vehicles, which lived NEXT DOOR to each other, had identical keys and the friend accidentally borrowed the wrong car unknowingly.

Back in college, my roomate and I had identical 84 Civic 1500S - even the same paint and trim package - and we discovered the same. We could open each others doors, but not start the others car.

I presumed this had more to do with wear on the locks/key than the matching models.

All I know is, if I come outside and someone is trying to open my car with their key, they better MOVE quick. Cause I will. shoot. you. There's an alarm for you.

Ah dude I think I would try my dad R.I.P 92 Legend to unlock my door but I already try to start the car with that key and it didn't work lol. You had nice engine bay lol.

lol ^ in nyc you prob will get shot by the cops thinking youre pulling a gun out when you try and show them id :nutkick: . I've tried this with all my legends and it works.

My friend had a beater 04 saturn and we can take the damn key out the ignition while he was driving. Many times if he didnt want to go where I did I would take the key out with him driving and tell him just do as I say :giggle:

well whoever it was couldnt get my vin, its covered by my dash mat and usually the dealership requires proof of registration before they make a key for an instance like that. he mustve been good with the slim jim then or else he got lucky

not even close to always. I've gotten keys made with out any proof. i had locked my key's in the car. got a drive to a dealership, got a key made. $5 later i'm back in my coupe and on my way!

heh, old GM's can be started without a key sometimes. just turn the ignition. my dad has had 3 different GM trucks that first i could pull the key out while driving, then i tried it one day, and turned the ignition without the key. great fun.

wow thats bad IMO. ive know some dealerships that do require... but i suppose if you lose the keys, you cant get the registration because you cant get in the car. still there has to been some kind of proof of ownership shown IMO for a dealership to make a key for it
