Engine Prob, worst sound ever (video) http://youtu.be/4GNWM6zbaUQ

Hey guys.

So last week or so I got a hole in my oil pan after hitting a rogue speed bump at 25. Replaced the part myself, wasn't so complicated, but took a good amount of time. Anyways after the job is done and I am all jazzed up to hear my Legend run again I get the most disgusting sound I've ever heard a car make. Wouldn't start the first few times, only making some bad, gross sound.

After letting it sit for a good 10 minutes I go to start again and it starts, but the sound its making when it runs is almost as bad. I'm afraid to shift it out of park, so I haven't drove around at all.

I will say I put 4.5 quarts of new oil in & the new pan is not leaking. Also the noise is so loud I can't even tell if it’s coming from the engine or not. When I hit the speed bump last week it wasn't making this noise, just loosing oil fast (I parked immediately so the engine was never running with no oil in it).

I need help guys, no spare $ as of now for a new vehicle. Will gladly answer questions or post more videos to help figure this thing out.

sounds like a shitty lawnmower -

(forum wont let me post links cause I don't have 15 posts yet) type in Youtube search box - 89 Legend Engine Problem (Loud Noise)

Wow, that's something I've never heard. How high is the RPM? Do you hear it mostly from the top or bottom. Make sure it's not the fans themselves that's probably stuck after hitting the bump. You can disable the fans momentarily by removing the fuse in the engine bay fuse box.

The RPMs sit at 1000 at idle. I will try the fans, but it sounds very loud (don't know if I could make this much noise with an industrial sized fan on full power).

On another forum they seem to think I might have spun the bearings. Hoping that is not the case as a new engine would be my next step :vomit:

found one on ebay for 325, any1 have an estimate on the labor costs for replacing a whole damn engine?
Well you're going to need to remove the oil pan again and inpect the bottom part of the engine. If its a spun bearing, you should be able to see silver particles in the oil. Make sure the pickup line that sucks up oil in the pan isn't rubbing against anything.
hopefully thats the issue. Frustrating, just took hours to take the old one off and put the new one in only to have to take it off again. But it will be worth it if that is the prob.

The engine wasnt making this sound when oil was streaming out so it does make some sense that it would be the pickup line
On the other Acura Legend Forum some things people are guessing :

Rubbing Fly wheel
Oil pickup
Baffle Plate

Any1 agree or disagree with these possibilites?

Fishing for any info I can
I Really don't see that being a spun bearing thats for sure, mine did it few years ago it didnt sound Anything like That. You should check the flywheel shield it does sound like something rubbing
Here is a general trick to isolate the origin of noise. mechanics have a mechanics stethoscope to probe different sections of the engine. very helpful in finding out where to start looking. but those are expensive and who has one of those handy? you can use a wooden dowel or anything in that fashion (hammer handle). wood is easier to listen to then metal rods. anyways put one end of your stick to a section of the motor and put your ear to the other. Check different area like the valve covers, alternator, upper block, lower block, oil pan and so on. be careful around the pulleys and have your tires blocked. your already in a bad situation, no need for a hospital visit.

also drain the oil in a clean container and inspect, drop your oil pan and inspect lower block. note any chipping, scuffing, bluing, or anything that doesn't look quite rite. disconnecting the timing belts and hand turning the crank can confirm a spun main bearing.
That sounds like the flywheel cover plate is rubbing ,
I remember that noise because i was replacing a tranny on late 60s charger , i had ran over that plate and when i go to start you just hear a loud knocking/rubbing noise , took off the plate (not knowing that was the problem , had my buddy start the car , and whala , no noise ,
I would try to check to see if that plate is bent , its easy to bend back in place , but I would reccommend pick a part it ,
He had the issue resolved already. It was the cover that was deformed and it was rubbing against the flex plate. After he took it off, the noise stopped.

You called it! I should have updated and let ever1 know it ended up being the flywheel cover
