Have a 93 L and I came to my parents house and let the car sit all weekend. come Sunday night I get in and there is a single click when i turn the key but all the accessories work fine, even the windshield wipers. I jump it anyway, and it's the same click, so i figure its the starter that has failed. I go out and try one more time and starts perfectly fine, like nothin was ever wrong... mates?

you have a sticky starter you can replace the solenoid (which is most likely the part that has gone bad) or replace the entire starter.

if you try starting it and it just clicks hit the starter with a hammer and try starting it again.

Why would someone say main relay? The main relay has nothing to do with the starter.

Gearhart28: Your starter needs to be replaced. No guessing on that one. Take it from someone that has been trying to jump a buch of 00 Vette's lately (Bad Starters). They did the same thing, click and no crank. Even with the cables on, click and no crank. Then after I tow it to the shop it would fire right up!

Every once in a while the car will just turn over and over and then start like nothing's wrong...main relay also?

edit: how bout i just search...
...is a classic syptom of the main relay going bad.

The main relay controls the fuel pump. No fuel, No start.

But he also said that the starter just clicked and didn't turn over. When a starter does this it usually means that either the brushes or selonoid is going bad. This could also cause the starter to turn slow. Slow starter usually = no start. Main Relay would be cranking but no start.

But he said One click which is also a another sympthom of the "Main Relay". Here is how you can surely tell. Don't start your car. Just turn the key to the second position. All the lights should come up on the dash(ABS, PARK, ENGINE, ETC). Don't turn it over yet. Wait a few seconds for all the lights to go away on the dash. If the "Check Engine" light stay on then its the main relay. And when you try to start the car it will crank but won't turn over or you will hear it "Click One Time". Sometimes the Check Engine light will go away on the second position. But when you try to start the car the light will come back and you will hear One Click or it will try to crank. Just pay attention to the dash. If this is your problem here is the link that will solve it

Well the car starts now and the check engine light goes off, but I could've sworn it was on when it wouldn't start, if I have the problem again I'll be sure to pay attention. I plan to take the relay out and open it up this weekend anyway. Thanks for all the help :2cool:

That link doesn't work BTW :(

The problem will come back. That's what happens. Sometimes it starts sometimes it won't. The next time it stalls just look at the dash. Oh and hot weather makes it worse(90 Deg+). If you leave it in the sun for a long a few hours, it wont start until it cools down outside. It sounds wierd but it's true. Good luck

It could be a fuel pump relay. If you turn on your ignition(not start), but turn the key to the on position. You should hear it(relay under dash just above hood release lever) click on also if you have an auto your d4 will light up briefly then go out. Not convinced pop the hood up right in front of steering wheel is your fuel filter when you turn the key to the on position fuel should spray if it doesn't replace the relay. I just had this problem last week. If all else fails remove or if your too lazy bang on the panel right above hood release latch worked for me.

Most likely these problems are due to the solenoid: :2cool: Inside the starter solenoid (on top off the starter unit) are contact-plates which are allmost worn out, It is possible to replace just the contacts, this is cheap....

ok well sorry to bump this thread up, but its that time of year again, and its cold. this problem came back for me.

i have an optima battery now, and i'm getting the random turn the key then i hear a single click and no start! then let it sit a second, then try it again, no luck, give it a few more secs, turn, and boom, fires right up no problem..

now, main relay? or starter?
