If I replace the premium head unit with one from say a earlier LS that doesn't say premium are there any issues? I am under the impression that the head units are the same and the diff is the amp under the back seat. Any wiring differences and do they all work with the steering wheel controls?

They are the same. You should have no problems. The wire harness will click right it.
