i was trying to figure out two things, first what would be the best speed (or RPM) to have the engine at to go the farthest while using the least amount of gas.

Second, by the #s below, can you tell if the engine is in good shape?

(Taken in 4th gear)
2000 RPM = 49 mph
2500 RPM = 62 mph
3000 RPM = 74 mph
3500 RPM = 85 mph

Having over 30 yrs of driving experience, I made the following observation this past summer while on a long drive on the Interstate: Set the cruise at 60. Let everyone else weave in/out and "jocky" for position. You can then sit back and drive in a steady manner which will optimize MPG.

Your best mileage is achieved around 45-55 for most cars.
This car is probably @ 55, just after shifting to 4th.

55 mph is where air flow/resistance starts to play a big part in efficiency in gas use. Above 55 mph gas useage starts to go geometric rather than just linear....by the time you hit 110 mph you are using 8x the gas you would at 55 (of course this depends on how slick your vehicle is in term of coef. of friction), but you can see that you would use more than 2x (if 55mph is 1 unit of gas use then 110 mph should use 2 units)....which would be the linear rate.
