Heater Always On. Climate control knob controls blow speed?

2344 Views 12 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  acuRRRas
I have a 1990 legend LS and i am trying to get it as manageable as possible.

I have swapped out the control unit to no prevail, and am assuming it is a relay. I could be wrong, and i would like some input on what this issue may be.

The Control knob that controls temperature when u mess with it it actually only speeds up or slows down the blow speed which is either, very light, or OMG ITS HOT lol.

The control unit lights flash though all the different buttons like a star trek space ship and i am only able to use AUTO and OFF.

Any ideas?

you have two knobs one for blower and speed and the temperature.
make sure you connected it correct.
the lights it may be the bulb as well

sorry about that but you gonna have to check on your connection.
there should be a button for the blower speed and a button for temperature control. Take it out and look at the back make sure connections are in the right place.
its raining right now, and no garage to work on it in at the moment. ill be checking back in the next few days. thanks for the advice

you know anything about why my speed sensor would just go out one day?

because thats what happened. and now i have no speedo.

You may have to replace the speed sensor. check the wiring to make sure.
speed sensor is about 220 before my discount @ autozone.

any tricks to get more life out of it?
On your auto climate, press and hold down the AUTO and OFF at the same time. If a light turns on in the manual control area, you have a bad item that needs to be replaced:

And for your speedo, there's a nut that splits in in the middle. Follow it from the firewall and you'll see this nut. The end of it goes to the transmission VSS. Loosen the nut and once you have it split, re-grease it in side of it. Hopefully that'll loosen it up for ya.

so i tried to do the code thing, and its a no go. something is out of wack forsure. i cant even do the diagnostic
It's totally different between Gen 1 and Gen 2 also manual or Auto.

As Lazy said do the diagnostic procedure.
Control cnob can be broken in bottom. Happened to me at another car.
but both of the control units i have do the same thing....

what are the odds its the hardware? something electronically is messing up.

My car is an LS manual trans
Yea, it must not be the control unit. This one looks tough. It's got to be a short, grounded wire, relay, or some other failed component causing a short circuit situation. I have never seen or heard about a problem like this in the Legend.

here is one thing I read that was relevant in the manual, (22-6)

NOTE: If you have one of the above symptoms, but no self-diagnosis indicator light, one df the basic heaterlair conditioner
components controlled by the system could be the cause, i.e., blower motor,A/C compressor clutch, recirculation
control motor, etc. Refer to the standard Heater and Air Conditioner section for troubleshooting and testing.

The manual also has a diagram(22-8) of the basic system components. Everything before the control unit flows through a "triple pressure switch" which appears to have its own ground. Check that out.

Tough because even the PCM is a possible cause. Follow the flow charts and tests. Don't throw parts at the problem. Start with the easiest tests like physical connections and grounds. Good luck my friend.
