my car makes like rumbling noise and makes the car shake most of the time when im in 4th gear (i have automatic) and i try to accelarate. ill push the gas to like halfway down, and it almost sounds like the transmission. although the transmission never has any problems at any other time. im afraid to take it to a mechanic cause if something is broken, he will tell me that he wont let me drive it away cause "it is unsafe". i was wondering if you guys could help me diagnose my problem before i do take it to the mechanic

LS92 Sedan.. the best way I can describe the problem is that it feels very asimilar to hitting the rumble strips on the side of the highway (you know the ones that wake you up on long drives when you start to lightly ease off the edge of the road and cause you to jerk the wheel back into the road). The sound appears at about 45-55 MPH, most of the time is on an slightly inclined road and will go away if you release your foot from the gas pedal or if you press the gas pedal harder. When it occurs if you hold your foot constant on the gas pedal it will remain. Definitely the front of the car more along the feet area (inner vehicle below gear shift console). I have changed axels a few (actually 4) times. How can you tell if your differential is failing? I can't believe it is the transmission because every gear shift is great and the car runs "Extremely" smooth (Almost as good as new) outside of when this intermittent rumble sound appears.

Sounds like your torque converter isn't locking up. When was the last time you changed your ATF and did you use Honda fluid? Drain the tranny and fill with 4 quarts of Honda ATF, drive 500 miles and repeat. Probably have some varnish buildup that's messing with your TC. Also, have you changed your diff fluid? I went to Mobil 1 synthetic in my son's coupe that hadn't been changed in 137K and made a world of difference.

krmontg, this is exactly what my symptoms are. I had transmission service just before going on a road trip and on the road trip I started getting the same vibrations. An acura mechanic mentioned "inner axle joints" or "differential" problems as possibilities. Did you resolve this?

stupid answer so forgive me. Check the tightness of all your lug nuts. If you have non-factory wheels, inspect them to be sure the wheel caps or center hole isn't hanging up. Ripple strips are pretty loud. I can visualize wheels shaking against the studs at certain speeds if the lug nuts and wheels aren't properly tightened down. This may not be it.

Also look closely at the tires for cupping. If the tires are cupped, they will act up in strange ways.

One question - is it as loud as ripple strips or just feels like it?

I'd also check the rear transmission mount. Mine caused some funny noises when it caused the exhaust and trans to rub. The trans actually drops about 1 1/2" when the mount goes away and that let mine hit the exhaust.

I have exactly the same problem with the vibration. Did you ever find out what it was and how to fix it. I also have very rough shifting when accelerating hard.

I had a similar problem with a Ford F150 and the torqe converter had to be rebuilt.

I am having noise in back of the engine i wonder if its a bad exhaust gasket its hot air when i accelerate then i hear the noise its on the pasenger side its really hott air do you guys know what it might be.. its like a ticking noise when i gas it like theres a big ass leak can you guys help me out
