Check to see if your brake lights are lighting up in the rear. Your car senses the brake depress by the brake lights going on. If you have a short in the brake lights or in the sensor above the brake pedal you cannot shift it out of park. I flicked the sensor in the wheelwell with my finger a couple of times and the problem went away. This was on my g2 coupe, your g1 might be different.
same thing happened to my G1. This is stupid, but I put the key in that hole and pressed the brake and slammed it from 1st gear to park a few times (with the car off of course) and it went away for good. I'm not suggesting this but it worked for me. I dont' want you to break anything, so be careful
I had a problem w/ the plastic thing that connects to the brake light switch about 3 months ago. When i had that, the brake lights would stay on no matter what, but i could brake. After driving tonite in the complete dark, i realized my brake lights dont work. I assume its a broken brake light swtich? Thats not too bad i guess. anyone else have input?
Legend C and Luv are correct. Had the same thing on my old G1. I forgot how much the part was but it took ME 20 minutes to put in. The little unit is behind the brake padal somewhere. Wisj I had my old G1 I could tell you exactly how to do it. Good Luck. Oh, if you press your brake and you don't hear that "CLICK" that means that unit is bad. That "Click" also releases your gear shift.
