1st time here and i have a HUGE problem. my car overheats but only under certain cercumstances. its only when you drive, not when the motor is under a load (like holding the brakes while accelerating lightly like 1700 rpm).it will sit and idle forever or sit at 1500-3000 rpms forever and never get above normal opperating range. i just replaced the timing belt, water pump, thermostat, and radiator. when doing the replacement of the timing belt and pump i noticed a black residue on the drivers side head, i thought it was oil but when i touched it it was hard and slick. i removed the cog and found some electrical peices under the cog. could these peices be damaged causing my car to change the timing and overheat. i have no coolant leakage. please help i love these cars, this one is my second. PLEASE HELP thanks. by the way im new to the board. clayton

The black substance is no big deal. It look bad but operates normal. Check this post for an explanation.

Make sure you have the correct radiator cap for your new radiator. Often the new radiator uses a different cap. If you have changed all those parts and don't have a leak in the system, the only thing left is the head gasket. Sorry.
Read these posts for my experiance with this dreaded problem.

Did you check for any Codes? Did you check your Idle? Does the car run rough? When cold, is the vehicle difficult to start? As mentioned the "black goo" is from the Crank/Cylinder Sensor.

Do both your fans work with the A/C on? Did you install an OEM thermostat with the bleed hole up?
