My old Acura dealership told me my AC was all shot with leaks everywhere and a price of $3500 to fix, so I did without AC last summer.

I decided to get it checked at a independant shop, who told me only the evaporator was leaking and I could get a new one installed for $800, but I might be able to try a sealer for $200. So they exacuated the system, put the sealer in and charged it up and now I have ice cold air.

1. Never trust a dealer ...
2. Always get a second opinion BEFORE spending large on a repair
3. Never give up ~

my whole condensor has leaks in it. they said they woudl repair it for 250 OR replace it for 500. This is from a private place. But i can buy a condensor for like 150 bucks online.

the thing is though... they told me that might not fix the problem because other things might exist after that they can not detect prior... is this true?

That could be true, but usually the condensor is the first to go, given that it is exposed to the elements more than the other components. Get the condensor done, and take it from there...Good luck!
