How do I install HID's???

When I go to run the wiring, how do I connect the balast to the existing wire for the headlights? The cover seems like it would be in the way. How do I go about running the wires into and out of the balast? I assume the light bulbs will be installed exactly as a halogen bulb? I haven't bought any yet but it is in the near future...thanx...
