Okay, Im just a bit curious. How much weight do you have to get rid of to actually see some performance gains? And if so, what kind of gains would I see?

Would losing 200lbs make that much of a difference?

Our cars are clinically obese. ;)

Well for sure your pants would fit better !

to answer this question for yourself ... does your car have better performance when you are alone in the car compared to when your 200 pound friend is sitting in the car with you ? I doubt you would notice an improvement from a 200 pound weight reduction.

I think a general rule of thumb is for every 100 lbs you loose you are about 1 tenth of a second faster. So, you need to loose about 500 lbs to be a half second quicker. 0.5 seconds is a lot though.

Damn thats alot. How much do you suppose the combined weight of ALL the exterior body would weight (Bumper, hood, fenders, doors, trunk). Im thinking about making my Legends body entirely out of Carbon Fiber. :giggle:

Please excuse my curiousity though.

Chris, you saying 200 pounds = 2/10 second less to do a 1/4 mile OR for 0- 60 mph ?
It is just a rule of thumb so the 0-60 and 1/4 miles can very from each other and even the actual time can vary. But generally speaking is should be about the same effect for both 0-60 and 1/4 mile.

I know I used a formula to help mike diaz out with his coupe's weight reduction, that actually worked out pound for pound the equivilant HP gain for removing weight.

If the search function would work for me... I could find it.

NEVERMIND I found it :)

I was working on some calculations for your weight reduction:

A legend coupe out of the factory weighs about 3460lbs.
It has 200hp and 210ftlbs of torque.

If you divide the weight of the legend by the horsepower you get 3460/200 = 17.3
If you divide the weight of the legend by the torque you get 3460/210 = 16.476

The horsepower to weight ratio is 17.3, so for every 17.3 pounds of weight removed from the car is equal to 1hp gain. Likewise, with torque for every 16.476 pounds of weight removed we should have an increase of about 1 torque.

If you are expecting the legend to weigh 2500lbs, that is close to 1000lbs less than teh factory spec. 1000/17.3 = 57.8hp. and 1000/16.476 = 60.69ftlbs of torque.

Thefore, with all your weight reduction, your car would be as fast as a 3460lb legend running 257.8hp and 270ftlbs of torque.

I'm still using that formula BTW. Thanks again.
