hi guys being the fact tat i'm only 16 i have never drag raced a person especially with an auto... i'm not really fond of autos so this is wat i heard... before u start I should put it in D1 than up to D4...
Or another way is to D3 then D4... well let me hear your stories of how u start off then... thx u

I'd say you're best off to just start in D4, torque it to about 1500 rpm, drop the brake and slam the throttle. As long as you keep it WOT, it'll go all the way to redline for each gear.
it's easier to me to shift from D1-D3 because, if you actually hold down the gas in an auto you'll see that the Trans Kick-Down Cable tries to pick you foot up off of the gas. it's distracting and annoying because if you come out of the kick down area the trans will shift quickly to the next gear and cause you to loose time. so with it in D2 or D1 you can lift and the trans will not shift.

but this is just my tactics follow if you want, if you dont then do whatever the hellios you want.

Auto fans...

I have always had the BEST results doing this:

1. Shift into D1
2. When green stomp the gas, preparing to shift into D3
3. Once you hit about 40-45 drop it into D3 in a smooth motion
4. Once you get WAY up there (nearing redline or at redline) go into D4 and feel the surge

I think this is preferable to just holding down the gas in D4. I seem to see a pretty good difference in take off times...

You might also notice that you get a clunk when going from D1 - D2 at higher RPMs. I am NOT sure what causes this clunk, but I have also had trouble with it. I do NOT recommend shifting from D1 to D2 at high RPMs, because this clunk definetly does not sound healthy and feels REALLY bad. It might have to do with the fact that even when in D3 you might notice that your transmission stretches first gear very far, and does not usually stretch second that much.

This method has been tried and tested by my G2 Sedan Auto, but NOT track timed. This is just my experience from racing on closed backroads with friends. If anyone has tried both methods and has access to getting a timed track run, TRY BOTH! PLEASE!

Thanks guys...

In what years do the Legends have a D1 mode? i hear everyone talking about it, but i only have 2 (holds in 2 gear), D3, D.

It really isint rocket science,

d3 from the start, hold the brake and floor it. it will automatically hold at 2000RPM, when ready release the brake.

Simple

d1 to whaterver lags the tranny between shifts, not to mention manually shifting your tranny at WOT is stressfull.

Take D3 all the way to revlimit, not redline, revlimit. Belive it or not our engines make power clear through 7000RPM.

shift before you hit it though, you dont want to stumble your shift to 4th.

my 3rd tops out at 115MPH

Freeway race starting from 30-40, have it already in second, shift at revlimit to 3rd and then revlimit to 4th.
in 2nd after 4000RPM you'll feel the torque pull.

My 2nd tops out at 80.

That really works? I can floor it in D3 and as long as I have the brake down it will only go to 2000rpm??? sweet

now I can't wait for work to finish just so I can try this :D

i also did not know this is that bad for your engine or tranny ?
yea its bad. which is why i dont do that.

I've heard a couple of things about the method of holding the brake and revving to 2000 rpm (known as brake torquing or torque braking). Many say it's bad for the tranny, while Jason (sorry to hear about the Duke man) says its not, that its just loading up the torque converter. I do it every so often and I dont have any tranny problems.... hopefully it'll stay that way.

I understand the concept of torque braking, but I thought he was implying that the legend had some hi tech version where the comp knew not to allow the revs to go beyond 2grand when the brake was on. I found out tonight that is not the case.....

I dont undrestand what you were expecting.

My RPM's stand still at 2000 with the brake depressed and the gas floored, how did i make it come out all hi tech?

i havent had any problems, your just loading up the Torque converter. just dont do it for more than 5-10 seconds

I did the torque braking thing last night in D3 and D4 - There was definitely a noticeable speed gain. Can it cause problems or is it okay?
Also, my car only goes to 1,800 RPM while standing on the brake, with a normal 600-700 idle speed - Is this normal?

So does this method of torque braking really increase start off? Cuz i just raced my brother's 2000 integra GSR and he beat me. I was a little less than a car away. Does this have to do with him having a better start off cuz he has stick? If i try that torque braking method, will i have a better chance? I swear though...it was sad to lose...I usually never lose

don't really use any of ur methods

at the track, i make sure i only have like a quarter tank of fuel, i then ad a bottle of NOS racing fuel, remove all unnessesary weight from vehicle [cd changer, spare tire, passenger seat, etc.], then bolt on my 15" Spoon Sports rims [black, 5 spoke rim, Nitto drag tires;) ], head to the line, when the last yellow light shuts off, nail the gas, floor until just before the car shifts to 2nd. at that point you get off the gas for like a half second, just until it shifts to 2nd, then nail it again and enjoy ur run, when ur done, either go to the start line again, or put back all ur sh!t and go home.

I've got a LSD, so that's why i just floor it with no hesitation, i nail it and it goes, no spinning tires no any of that sh!t.

oh yeah, the lifting before 2nd, prevents the inevitable chirp that i believe all legends do at 2nd gear. although the chirp looks/sounds cool, it actually slows down ur car.

always remember, 100lbs = a tenth of a second @ the track ;) :D

i tried torque braking last night in my 94 ls coupe and it just made my start off even slower...i followed exactly what you guys said
the key is knowing when you can power brake. if the conditions are bad, you won't get any traction and spin your wheels all the way through first. also, you have to make sure you totally drop the brake, just like you would the clutch, and not gradually release it. its a little tricky at first but you get used to it.
