I would have to say that I thought the same as you at first. As an owner of an 87 Celica GT Alltrac manual, 92 Prelude, and the two legends I can say that the LEGEND's tranny is a different beast; it requires to be driven when matched with that 3.2 (when it is cooled properly).
The shifting to me was bothering me at first as I could not "slam" it into the next gear. My shift range would be ~3-3.5 grand and it was choppy, sluggish almost. Began shifting at ~4.25-5.0....all is well. My two cents.
