Hey everyone,
This topic has surfaced several times in the past, many question as to whether or not our cars have VTEC, the reasons differ, but the resulting answer is always the same, No. I have a brief understanding as to why, since we have an SOHC engine, and VTEC involves a diff set of cams that kick in at higher RPM's etc.
Yesterday at a performance shop "Driver's Seat" I spoke with someone who worked there who i've gotten to know from several visits. To get to the point, he also owns a legend, with quite a few mods, but he insisted that Legends have VTEC. He explained that our engines were built off of the NSX's etc etc and that the engines get louder past 4k RPM's. He also says he has a friend who built a 12.8 sec legend (ALL MOTOR!) by swapping out genuine acura parts from the NSX (but that's a diff story) I continued to disagree, and told him the increase in engine noise at high RPM's was the three stage intake (VIS, and NOT VTEC) but I want SOLID proof to prove to him that we don't have VTEC.
Can you guys help me out? I'd like to make an interesting wager with him :)

Yea, show him proof on his own ****ed car... pop the hood. It doesn't say VTec. Everyone of Honda's motors ever made with VTec, SOHC or DOHC, ALWAYS say VTEC across the valve cover.
Or challenge him to find the VTec solenoid or what exactly the cross over point is. He'll never be able to prove it and you'll come out ahead.

that's a good point, but i was hoping for something that was written in some Acura Press Release, some solid proof written in black and white than can rule out any doubts in his mind.

go get a helms or chiltons. and have him find the section on VTEC hahaha..... but i wanna know more about the 12.8 second NA legend with nsx parts =)

but its' common for people to drive legends and think that we got vtec, one of my friends who is a die-hard honda head and has built many 12 second hondas drove my legend and kept askin me if I had "vtec" haha.

Not true
the D16 series have VTEC's that arent stamped VTEC on the valve cover. 98 HX comes to mind. 2001 Ex.....

Hey Zol, he said that he swapped valve springs, pistons, etc, he named a bunch of internal parts, that i didn't have enough knowledge about size etc to argue about, but as soon as he INSISTED we have VTEC, i was determined to prove him wrong...i don't have a helms manual, any place online where i could find something to prove we don't have VTEC? He's also worked for acura in the past, but that didn't phase me, as there are some techs at my local acura dealer that don't know of the 6 speed, lol.

ok first off the NSX has V-tech in the like 94 and up i belive so that cancels out there being on in the legends unless they put it in the 95 legends which i doubt. The NSX is also a DOHC and the engines they did make in 1991-1994 were 3.0liters. And im sure someone will tell you about the buterfly opening at 4500RPM its a pretty long thing to type.

DSM killer, check the Legend Temple site, he has original sales and specs sheets for G2's. And if it doesn't say VTEC on these it doesn't have it because that is one if not the biggest selling point of a VTEC. Or just call Honda or and Acura dealer and then make him feel stupid.

The NSX always had VTEC.

Like a lot of other people have said, Honda made/makes both SOHC and DOHC VTEC engines.

It sounds like this person is going to continue to believe that the Legend has VTEC eventhough he can't find any literature to support that belief. You're just gonna have to tell him to show you the extra lobes on the Legend camshaft (or some other hardware that is specific to a VTEC equiped engine).

First - I have a 93 delsol Si SOHC Vtec. The engine says 'Honda'. I purchased it new and it's original.
Second - Find all of the reviews of the Legend on the net. They mostly talk about the 3.0 engine, it's not a Vetc. Have fun.

I think we have to find an explanation as to why the Legend motor gets louder at 4000 rpm in order for him to understand that it is something else. It does get quite louder. I don't have an intake, but I removed the air piping up to the throttle body and made a pass down the street and noticed the extremely loud intake after 4000 rpm. Anybody able to explain this?

It's the Legend's VIS system inoperation.

It comes on the cam a bit around 4000 so you would expect it to breath better and be a bit louder. My NSX comes onto VTECH at around 5500....the only way you can a prove to a knowitall (who has never seen a vtech engine!) is to pull the valve cover and ask him to identify the vtech cams (if he even knows what a cam is). My experience is that arguing with a**h*l*es is fruitless, they are closed to facts.
