Idle is weird when in gear

On my 88 sedan, if im roll up to a stop light and leave it in first with the clutch depressed the car will sometime die. But most times the idle drops to about 200 then to 1000 then to 200 then to 1000 etc. I've checked all vacuum lines and conections but i dont see anything wrong. Is this normal?

I have the same problem on my 1987 with 180,000 miles.
Have you found a solution yet?
I had the exact same problem when my check engine light came on for something. I believe it is caused by the ECU going into failsafe or limp mode because it detects a problem. Check ECU and TCU for codes or reset ECU and see if it goes away.
umm when that happens something is wrong with your iac motor.
i was doing a test when you disconnect the iac motor.
i did and the idle was loopy...so the ecu compensated.
then the check engine came on.
then i connected it back and it was still loopy till i restarted her up.

the valve could be dirty or going out.....

i found the prob just last week end the thing that opens the butterflys on the intake (follow the # 8 and 2 vaccum lines) wasnt working (they had no vaccum) so i replace the vaccum box with all the lines coming out of it and now the engine runs MUCH better the butterflys open properly and i have better lowend and gas milage
