ignition coil problem?

5013 Views 9 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  leg396
I thought i had fixed this issue already, but its acting up again. When the car finally gets warmed up when i am in d4 the car will start idling low around 750 and act like its dying, the car will shake and once i start going it will sort of bog down then drive smooth. Is this the ignition coil? I already replaced all spark plugs and still have this issue...WTF!!!!!!! I pulled a coil from pull a part last week so i might have to take this one back...

It can be a lot of things, is the CEL on?
FSM has a very simple bench test to perform on the coil pack to determine if it is good or bad. Suggest you try that before just replacing parts.
ok so i individually tested each coil by unhooking each clip and each one made the engine worse so they work. I cleaned the IAC and throttle body, but still get the shaking when its idling in d4. WTH, could it be the spark plugs? I just replaced them with ngk v-power # 7092 or 7094 i can't remember, and they are gaped at .044, but maybe this is what the problem is... Should i put iridiums?
also if they weren't gaped right could that be a reason for the car to shudder in d4 and shake at 750-600rmps???
so i just installed ngk iridiums and the same issue, so i checked all the coils again and i am sure it has to be one of them, because it doesn't seem to make the engine run horrible like the other ones... so i will buy one on ebay and if that doesn't work, then i have no idea. possibly fuel injector? How would i check those?

Pull each fuel injector coupler off (they tend to be a pain in the ass to get off) and check the resistance of each, should be between 1.5 and 2.5 Ohms. Also while its running you can use a mechanics stethoscope to listen to each injector click check out the online service manual listed in the top few sticky forums
I replaced all plugs with iridiums, replaced the one coil i suspected and also adjusted the idle screw thats near the rear of the engine and it runs AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am extremely happy now, because I plan on selling this car soon.
Hi there, congratulations on your success. You need to celebrate. I have the same problem you had. I am also confused because I had replaced the spark plugs with dealer originals not more than 15000 miles ago. And even then I had the same problem just not as bad as it is now. So, after pin-pointing the faulty coil, how did you adjust the rpm and what value do u adjust it to? Thanks a lot for your time and help in advance.

P.S. Is it ok to run the car without all coils connected? (for testing for the bad coil)
