Hey all.
I jut finished ripping out the stock intake assembly and putting a cone filter in! It was a lot easier than I thought - whole thing took about an hour. I removed the air filter box and used the stock intake tubing, a standard 3inch cone filter fit perfectly on the end! The set-up sounds a lot more balanced than with the air box cover off, and 'seat of the pants' it feels a bit more responsive and gutsy than the stock intake set up. Will have to keep an eye on fuel consumption on a long trip and see if the gains there are worth it.
I'll post pics soon, but in the meantime a few questions

I took a look inside the intake as I removed the stock tube completely to fit the filter and noticed a little brown discolouration on the butteryfly valves - might my intake need a clean? and can I spray some carb cleaner in there?
any advice on how to clean intakes would be appreciated.

cheers

Careful when you clean the TB. I did so with a TB cleaner, NOT a Carb cleaner,... different stuff. I must have broken loose some **** because right after I had some problems with my EGR sysyem. It turns out that I clogged my EGR solonoid.

I am not saying don't do it, just make sure your know where you are spraying.

i cleaned out that mother about a few months ago. all i did was CAREFULLY spray some degreaser, cause it was some black gunk that built up on the butterfly flap. then i wiped off the gunk and opened the flap so i could wipe the top and bottom of the opening. i tried to wipe as far inside as i could. also try to get it all out so that when the flap shuts it makes a smooth contact with the opening. be careful not to spray too much and dont spray anything inside the body with the flaps open. also a question that i started thinking was that if there was black gunk on the butterfly flap, where did that come from?? isnt clean air from the filter passing through the throttle body 1st? if so how did it get dirty and is there any other parts in our engine that could use a good cleaning after about 10yrs of use??

to clean it like a pro lol jk but this is the best way i know.
u have to keep it running make sure the motor is warm that seems to help then just get some tb clean and spray it in there while giving it gas and letting off on the gas do this till about 1/2 the can is gone when u do this u should have a unusuall smell coming from ur exhaust. but that way works like a charm for me if any questions just reply
