If his enginge was run with no oil pressure, "oil light on" for more than 10 seconds it is most likely done. These engine just dont tolerate low oil pressure, too much damage will occur.

Did it ever overheat, needle in the red?

To properly top off the coolant you need to top it off at the radiator. You should bleed the air out of it if the coolant got low. There is a procedure in the owners manual for this. Topping off the resivoir doesn't help the engine if the radiator is low.

Did it just die and coast to a stop or did start "chugging" as if it were running out of gas, go for another mile and finally quit?

Just died - could have broke the timing belt.

"chugged" for a while - just ran out of gas.

If the water pump fails and "locks up" the timing belt will be destroyed and break. The engine will just quit and the end result is that your heads will have some bent valves.
This means you won't have compression on all cylinders so you will need new valves or heads. Better off getting a new engine if this is the case.

When you tried to start it, did it sound different when turning over? Like it was turning faster, without much resistance?
