I need to replace the oil pan on my 91 and I'm having some trouble getting the differential off. I have the axles and intermediate shaft out already but I can't get the extension shaft to budge out of the tranny.
I don't have the puller tool and I'm using an 8mm bolt with some washers on it. The thing just won't move and I'm afraid I'm going to break the bolt off in the shaft if I put any more pressure on it.
What I would like to know is how much pressure it should take to pull that shaft out. Also, is there any way to pull the oil pan without removing the diff?

Another thing, I'm not sure if it makes any difference but after the battery was pulled I I needed to move the car so I used the key to put the shifter in nuetral without power. I put the car back in park, but without power.

i believe that you have to loosen the tranny up from the back of the engine a little bit to give it just enough room for the diff to slip off of that shaft.

The Haynes manual says the extension shaft should pull out of the back of the tranny far enough to remove the set ring which locks the shaft into the tranny. My problem is that the shaft won't budge so I can't get to the ring.

there is a DIY on getting the differential out, do a search for it. James92LS made one.

Mine slid out by hand.

Mine only required fingers to pull it out and disengauge the splines. Put your trans into neutral and that should take some of the pressure off. You may already have moved it back. Try pushing it forward.

Thanks guys. Judging by Hondaman's post, it's definately binding on something. Tomorrow I'll try shifting it in neutral with the battery connected and see if it makes a difference.

If i remeber correctly
take the cap off then screw in a 12mm bolt(m10 or m8, 1.25 or 1.50 pitch) in with a big washer on the end then use a ball joint(like a wish bone) seperator with an pipe extention to pop it out.

Helms service manual is a big help.

Yeup... that is what I did... You use one of the bolts from the intermediate shaft and steal one of the huge suspension washers from under the hood. I shoved a stake between the washer and the end of the differential, then screwed the bolt into the end of the shaft until it was tight, then pried it apart.

Thread size is M8. I actually managed to stretch the threads on the M8 bolt I was using to the point where I can no longer screw it into the shaft by hand.

You can't pull the pan without pulling the diff, you can't pull the diff without pulling the extension shaft. If the shaft will not come out you'll have to pull the trans first. The only time I've seen one get that stuck was when the splines filled up with rust. That took a 4 lb hammer and a large punch to drive it out from the inside.
