Need ideas for Head-unit Security (IVA-W200)

Okay, so I ordered the Alpine IVA-W200 in dash TV thinking that the screen retracted. Low and behold, it doesn't retract. Therefore, the screen is ever present in your console. Me, being the paranoid person that I am, do not wanna park in and around New York City with a TV staring people in the face from my car.

That's just asking to get robbed around here.

So, do any of you clever car owners have suggestions for discretely "hiding" the fact that I have this monitor in my console? I mean, my brother's old integra had a TV in the dash with a custom made leather surround that hid the fact that there was a TV. Do you think if I had one of these made, it would conceal the fact that there is something worth stealing in there?

Or, should I just bite the bullet and get the lesser unit with detachable face?

Give me your thoughts, please. :sadwavey:

I was thinking, why not put foam batting (sp, the kind they use in quilt making or something like that) behind the stock face. And to mount it, I was thinking about how about putting a bar on the top of the stock unit, and have the hooks be something like you would see on a cheap toy (like the cheap toy books, where you can pull them apart, but still hinge) Ill see if i can find a picture of what im talking about.

Eric, I like that idea in principle, but there are a number of glitches in the execution. (1) The IVA-W200 does not mount flush as the Bose unit did, so the extra thickness of the Bose faceplate plus batting would look suspicious. (2) The faceplate would come off OK, I think, but some of the knobs and switches are likely connected to the guts and not the faceplate, so it might be a PIA to extract the way you want it. Actually, I have my old Bose unit here (planning to put it up on Ebay), but I'm not wild about taking it apart to prove my point. (3) The attachment might be really tough to do well.

So, how about an alternative. Take a good digital photo of the front of an old Bose unit (yes, yes ... if I get a chance I can take it of mine for you). Resize the photo and print on matte paper. Glue the photo to a thin piece of plexiglas and then mount that over the W200 unit. you could also make an "insert" to fit in the screen depression and back it with microfiber to avoid scratches.

Just a thought.

Another good idea.....Go, would you mind taking close-up side angle pics of your IVA-W200. I wonder if it would be possible to mount the unit flush, and have my custom autobody guy make a plastic bezel to "snap in" over the screen so that it looks like a phantom screen unit.

I am sure the guy can make it for the right amount of money....it's just a matter of being able to mount the IVA-W200 flush with the headunit opening so there is enough space to snap in a concealing cover.

What do you think?

That sounds like a good idea. It doesn't seem like it would be hard to do. If you still need pictures I could take some for you tommorow.

why dont you customize your center console, by having a shop or yourself fiberglass and mount it directly into your console, only way to remove it is to seriously destroy that center console + rip it off in order to remove screws behind it.

I was thinking that you could do what they stated above, and push back your unit which will allow more spacee for you to do the fake face.

Good idea as well....but if a thief wants the unit, they will stop at nothing to get it...no matter how securely you mount it. I am gonna go by the custom autobody place on Wednesday and ask him if he could make a plastic cover that I can pop into the console when parked to cover the screen.

Seems simple enough. Thanks for the suggestions guys.

This is why I still have the stock HU. But everything else is far from stock. I'm also having a motorized 7.5" widescreen monitor installed that will be motorized. This way everytime I shut the car off it will retract itself. Even in the area I'm in I'm doing this and around here people can leave there cars running with the windows down. No one ever takes cars around here.

Ya, where i was in clermont, we never really had to worry about it either. Maybe some people are decent still.

Yeah well Jordan is a dick and took my keys then the car. I still haven't had it fixed yet. I just don't have the money. He hasn't taken the car again, but then again he don't know that the car won't start unless the rear defroster is on.

If you make it so that the entire console has to come out you just make it worst for you. As it is the Acura radio is relatively easy to pop out especially if you do it the crude way.

The best idea so far is putting the factory face over it.

OK, Eric and everybody .... here are pictures of my IVA-W200 install. Pardon the dust :( , but I've got shots of the profile and what it looks like when fully extended to get access to the DVD slot. After looking at it again, I think you could get a custom plastic bezel to "snap over" the unit and fill it with whatever (blank, photo of Bose, photo of handgun).

I was gonna suggest the same with making a fake radio front....is there enough room back there to "sink" the Alpine in though? if there is you can mod the stock tray out and move the HU back and make a simple slip in fit for the factory radio...we did this to a Expidition once...worked really well..another we made a small black cover that just slid into place and to look at you would have thought the radio had already been stolen and the guy just didnt want to replace it.

I have no idea how far back your guys' HU's sit in though so....you would have to measure to insure a proper fit

It looks like OEM fitment. Perfect as if it came with the car.
Thanks. It would be better if it fit further back, however.
How much did you pay for them or how much are they going for? I might be interested. Also Does it come with the dash kit?
Won't give my price, but they are going for a good bit less than retail ($1200). Installer provided the dash kit (Metra).

Last question :) but would they happen to fit for the sedans?
Uhh, err .... mine is a sedan.

Wow that looks sweet nice pics. It looks really close to the shifter when it is in park does it ever touch the shifter?

Anyways frantinez I got an idea for you. I saw a scion T ? (whatever the car model letter may be) don't know if you have ever seen the dash. It has like a 1.5 din HU. I was quiet impressed. The HU was installed a little further than norm. So it looks a little sunk inward, but then it has a plastic swing door attached to the very top. So you can swing up the little door when using the HU and swing it back down shut when not using the HU. It totally looks like it is a storage bin. You would never think there is a HU in there.

Moist,

Got a pic?

Dude I wish I would have had my camera I would have taken a pic. just try to notice a parked scion the little sports car I think T is the model number, and look in it. If I see another scion around I will post a pic. I think you will be impressed and you will probably go with something like that. Oh wait actually I have another option My girl has a little Toyota Corolla that has a storage bin that resembles my example of what I saw on the Scion. She is on her way home; I will snap a quick pic to give an example, but just if you happen to see a scion take the effort to glance inside.
