Hey everyone, I hope posts like this are allowed because pretty much every other forum I've been on jumps down your throat when you post a thread that basically says "Hi I'm new and now I'm going to ask a bunch of questions that have already been answered 100 times". The only reason I'm starting a new thread is because I'll have some questions that are unanswered AND hopefully some of the things I say in general will give me a response that will be interesting to read.

Before you hear about my new car and what I have to say, you should know a little about me. I'm 18 and this is the 3rd car I've owned. Don't immediately think I'm some dumb kid who's going to ruin a perfectly good car. I went thru my "ricer" stage with my first car when I was 16 and my head has been on straight ever since. My previous cars were Acura Integras and it looks like I couldn't help but stay in the Acura family. My new pride and joy is a 1992 Legend (LS?) 2 Door 5-Speed coupe. Let me tell you, I fell in love with Legends the first time I saw a really clean 2-door. I'm not hating on the 4-doors, but I think the coupes just look really sexy. I also have to admit that I'm floored with the luxury this car presents...people are stunned when I tell them it's a 92, especially once they get inside...it's twice as nice as my 95 GS-R was!

My last car, the 95 GS-R, was stolen and stripped. I loved going fast in that thing...I was in the high 14s on the quarter mile...something that would be very hard for my Legend to pull. But with this car, I don't care about going fast, I just want to look good and have a really nice car to ride in. My first plans are to restore it to stock-looking mint condition. Who cares what rims you have on a car if it's crumby on the inside and has oxidizing paint on the outside? Which brings me to my first few points/questions...

This car wasn't perfect when I bought it 3 weeks ago, but it was damn near close...here's some things that need to be improved upon:
1a. [Passanger Seat Leather] it's cracked and even broken at some parts...overall it's not disgusting and it's still comfortable to sit in...but it's nowhere near as nice as the rest of the car...how much does it cost to have it restitched/restored? Or should i just look into buying a whole new seat?
2a. [Odometer] this seems to be a common problem with the Legends...it's not completely broken, but it's random in when it captures my miles...sometimes I'll take an entire trip and log 200 miles...other times I'll drive for an entire week and the thing won't budge. Is there an easy fix? Or do I need to replace the whole cluster?
3a. [Idle] after reading the "coolant" thread, this had me sweating because I've dealt with blown headgaskets before and they murder my wallet. My Legend idles generally around 300-500rpms...but sometimes at a stoplight or when I come to park, I notice it bounce up to 600-700rpms for a split second...then back down to 400 or so for 10 seconds...then back up to 600-700 and so on....I went behind my car after startup and white smoke was coming out of the tailpipe (and my heart dropped)...but then when I went onto the road I noticed half of the cars out there had white smoke and I realized it was about 50 degrees that day. What's your take?
4a. [Gauge Cluster] something really common in the Honda scene was to pull out the cluster and then replace 3 or so bulbs so the whole cluster lit up a different color. The stock color isn't doing it for me and I want to stick some red bulbs in there...can anyone tell me what size bulbs light up the main parts of the cluster (speedometer, tach)? Also, my Climate Control lights seem to be out (they don't light up when the headlights are on), is a fuse blown or do I need to replace the bulbs behind the buttons?
5a. [Mileage] i normally wouldn't buy a car with 157,000 miles but I was too in love to say no. Given that the odometer has been broken since the previous owner had it (he owned it for 9 months), it's probably safe to assume this car is well over 160,000. I checked the FAQ but is there any immediate service that I should take care of?

Now, as for my plans... like I said, I'm not trying to go fast or make a really in-your-face show car...I just want simple looks that set my car apart in a crowd and make people drool. Here's my ideas so far...
1b. [Fix it first] I'm not going to spend a lot of money making it look good until everything on the list above is taken care of. I only put this on here so everyone knows that I have my priorities straight and I'm thinking carefully about what I'm doing.
2b. [Painted Trim] Another common theme with Hondas in general is this nasty black exterior trim that all of our cars seem to get from the factory. On the Legend, it starts at the front lip, heads towards the sideskirts, then ends at the rear valence. What I've seen a lot of people do with Integras and Civics is remove the piece from their car, lay it out on newspapers, and then spray it with Duplicolor paint in a can with 3 or 4 coats nice and even then top it off with a Duplicolor clear coat. They mount it back on their car and nobody can tell the difference. Has anyone done this with their Legend? Pictures? Furthermore, where was the paint purchased (Kragen didn't have it)? And most importantly, is there anywhere with instructions on how to remove these exterior pieces?
3b. [Headlight and Taillight Touchup] The first thing (and probably only thing) that I disliked when I saw the Legend was the amber that's all over the car's lighting. The corner lights are obviously going to get the ebay special clear treatment, but the bumper lights and taillights are what concern me the most. I read on another site that there is no replacement for the bumper lights and if you want the amber gone you have to chisel it out yourself. Is this true? Something we did a lot with our Integras was put red vinyl over the amber parts of our taillights or mask off the white reverse portion and then spray the rest red. Refer to this thread and this article to see what I'm talking about. Can any of you offer any solutions for getting rid of the amber in my taillights? Lastly, I was thinking of baking my headlights and then spraying the inside black like my friend Greg did in this thread...does anyone think blacked out headlights would look good on a WHITE Legend?
4b. [Lower It] Most people make the mistake of buying rims first and because larger rims usually raise the car up a little AND have smaller tires, it just doesn't look as good as it should. I want to slam my Legend about two inches all around...maybe 2.5. However I know from experience that going that low will require a camber kit if I don't want to buy new tires every three months. Does anyone have reccomendations for which camber kit to go with? For that matter, which spring + shock combination retains the most ride comfort? I understand lowering your car reduces ride quality, but I'd still like somewhat of a nice ride...it is a luxury car after all. Lastly, has there been any problems getting LCA bolts out? My Integras had to have them drilled out because they were so old that they rusted off on the inside, will my Legend have the same problem?
5b. [Sound System] the previous owner installed an Alpine deck and upgraded all of the speakers and to put it lightly, it sounds great. Everyone has complimented me on the sound clarity and quality. He also left all the wires that he had going to his trunk for his subwoofer and amp so that I could do the same. I've always hated sub boxes because they slide around and generally look tacky. I've seen some boxes that are made to "blend in" with the car's trunk and normally fit snugly into a corner. Are there any of these boxes out there for the Legend? I already have my subwoofer (10 inch Alpine Type R) picked out and I plan on getting an amp that won't under or overpower it as well.
6b. [Wheels] so far back on my list simply because they are so expensive and because this is the one upgrade that I'm still completely undecided on. It's hard because the Legend is a luxury car, so I definitely don't want "racing" wheels with thin spokes and aggressive designs...but at the same time I'm not a stunna so I don't want "bling bling" wheels that are all chrome. I'm looking for some 16 inch wheels (17s would be pushing it and 15s are too small) that are clean with a thick design, maybe 5 or 6 spokes...not too aggressive..a chrome lip is okay...but generally I just want them to flow with the design of the car and don't take away focus from the whole car. I'm completely lost because that is a very selective type of wheel, so I'm hoping you guys will have some good suggestions.
7b. [Flip Up LCD Screen] I'm looking wayyy down the line, but I think for the "complete" luxury package, I'm going to have to have a 5-7 inch screen coming out of my dash. I haven't put any serious thought into it nor is my heart set on it but any opinions/ideas/experiences are more than welcome.

This thread has been insanely long by my standards but it's only because I'm so excited about this car. You don't have to reply to everything [technically you don't have to reply to anything], but I'd really appreciate any feedback you leave and if someone could answer my questions (as many as they can), that would be great because, as you know by now, I'm new to the Legend scene, but I'm eager to learn!

First off welcome to the forums. And seriously, I think that may be the longest post I have ever seen! I am glad that you are going to actually fix the problems with your car and not try and "band-aid" them like so many others do. If something doesnt work, they just pull the indicator light out.

To answer some of your questions:

1a. I am not sure about stiching, but there is a leather fix kit that has been mentioned somewhere on the forum. Try searching. Also, try some of emu's All Soft. It works wonders with softening and conditioning your leather.

3a. Normal idle for a Legend is between 600-700 rpm. Dont quote me, but I think the service manual says 650 is normal.

4a. Check out the newbie FAQ page in the second generation forum for a listing of recommended maintenance.

3b. I pulled the amber out of my bumper lights. Its not too bad, I just took a flat razor blade, put it on the seam and pounded lightly on it. It took less than 5 minutes to remove the entire clear lens. Then pulling out the amber was simple. Seal the lens back on with some RTV silicone sealant. Now I just need to get some clear bulbs that blink amber.

Post some pics of your car!!

welcome dude, congrats on the transfer 'teg > > L E G E N D
1 - i wouldn't pluck out the side moldings if i were you b/c once off, there's a dimple that again would need to 'sucked out'>sanded>bondo'ed>painted....not cost effective!
just get the five charc. paint id of your car and painting with the dupli-color (like you said) i think is the best way of ridding yourself of that horrid black strip...of course going from black to white requires some serious base coat...layers of them
2 - just my opinion - i think the best combo is 17"s all around w/ 1.5" f & 1"r slam..going w/16" - though more comfy than 17"s - ain't that far from 15" and so the difference in visual ooohs (main purpose of rims besides handling) thrown at you won't suffice...
3 - sub amp.. www.cardomain.com/item/PHOX4001 (full MNFG. warr of 1 yr. & sale price 179.95...originally 349.99)...don't matter if your type r is dual 4 ohm or dual 2 ohm because this amp is stable at both impedences gives a healthy 400watts RMS (continuous)...PG is one of those high quality companies that underrates their stuff so at about 13.8volts of vehicle voltage input you'll already be running over 400...so at the dynamic 14.4volts you know you're pushing damn near half a buck if not more!!! you don't need 500 on the dot...this is the Xenon level from PG line (flagship) so the features on there are out of this world!!!
4 - flip out monitor - http://www.cardomain.com/item/JENVM9510...i'll save space so just read my review on this link
5 - white smoke...http://www.acura-legend.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=59080
last thing...if you don't already know this forum has a lot of experienced/smart members...evert time i log on here i take something...

I too have just recently purchased a legend and would like to restore it back to looking like it just came off the showroom floor. The main problem I think your going to run into is the acura dealers (at least in my area) don't have any of the
"accessories" for your legend b/c they just don't make them anymore. They are only going to have mechanically parts and body parts.
For example my interior is a Type C (blue) and as I fount out after purchasing the car that was one of the most rare interior colors, lucky me huh . I can't find any freaking parts for it on ebay. It's is extremely good shape for a 91 but there are some parts I would like to fix. I can't find any floor matts b/c they don't make them anymore and no one has any sell, that is driving me crazy.
I just bought a sunroof visor off ebay that was "in good condition". To be frank it looks like sh!t. There is no way i am putting that on my legend.
To be honest I am getting a little frustrated. I broke a door handle installing my stereo, guess what I can't find a new one to buy. Little things like that are starting to get too me.
I like the car and also like you, people can't believe it's a 91 but my frustration is starting to get the best of me. But i keep remembering i only paid $4850 and it's only got 102,000 miles on it so I got a great deal, at least I hope I did assuming I didn't buy a lemon. Checked out okay on carfax but that doesn't mean everything.
Hope I am not "letting the wind out of your sails" but just giving you a heads up on what the road looks like in front of you. Good luck and happy restoring.

Now I will take a stab at 2B.
There are members on here that have painted the trim pieces. My car is white and the ones on here look a lot better after they have been painted, I am just curious of the long term effect if the paint is not pealing off now. I am considering purchasing new black ones that are not faded.
7B - stereo
I have my car in a million pieces right now installing my stereo system. I just purcahsed a used Eclipse AVN2454 double din nav piece. It just arrived tonight. Looks like I am going to need a double din install kit or try to make something out of plastic because it's just a tad smaller than the factory radio and there are gaps in there which do not look good.
I want to buy headrest monitors that already have the monitors mounted in them but guess what, they only come in Tan, black & grey . However, I did talk to one stereo shop that mentioned they could be died to match my interior so there is a positive.
Also you should be able to buy new clear bumber lights and corner lights (although I like the JDM 1 piece headlight, looks really sweet), check ebay.

Jeez, my thread was almost as long as yours :giggle: J/K welcome to the board from a fellow acura-legend.com newbie myself.

underground legend - right now i only have my digital video camera which has crappy quality for stills so im waiting til I get back home before I take pics....just imagine a white coupe with tan interior haha and if you want the night shot...HIDs ;x

mondonalds - thanks for the answers! how do you remove the bumper lense? on my teg there was just one screw on the front but the legend doesn't have any screws...do i have to take off the bumper or do i just pry it out? as for your search for a clear bulb that blinks amber....Sylvania Silverstars are for you!

chimuyo1 - that's a lot of reading for me to do haha, but seriously thanks though...i've heard a lot of good things about phoenix and that amp might be just what im looking for. 17s are okay but like i said, im not really going for the "wow" factor of rims...just something nice that people will like...

trulegnd - i definitely see where you're coming from...but any car that has been discontinued is going to be short on parts...whenever i went to the stealerships they never had what i needed, and the integra was discontinued only in 2001! also, the inside door handle on my passanger side got broken by my roommate who is 6'1" and weighs 250 pounds because he has no respect for my property so now i remind people to be gentle with my car because i dont want anything else broken. i baby this car and treat it right so hopefully i won't be scrounging for replacement parts anytime soon! if you clearcoat and regularly wax the painted pieces they shouldn't crack...i've seen them 2 or 3 years later on some cars still looking good. i'll look into the JDM one-piece headlights but usually anything JDM is expensive haha.

first off i am not the one that said it..i merely quoted it...

Second:

If i redid mine...(we have some things in common) this is what i hope to achieve.

Repaint OEM with metallic flake added, lower on JIC, run with GS style chrome 17" rims, remus, JDMs, keep original body or use the Sarona bodykit, redo leather interior two tone, 5spd with spec stage 2, and the engine...well that is for me to know. ;)

So if you want some member to get ideas from..., acc-unit, ack-crawler, 4cruzin, 91lsman, khoerling, and others......good luck my man! And remember this aint no integra. :2cool:

Check out Legend Tuner

http://24.96.59.129:8080/LEGENDtuner/main.html

It gives a DIY for bumper light removal, however, it shows pictures for either a 94 or 95, which have different front bumpers. You will need to remove the two fog light covers with one phillips screw that faces the ground. Then pop out the covers. Once they are out, you will need to find the screw that holds the bumper light on. Its kind of hard to find the first time, but once you found it, you will know. Loosen the screw then the bumper lights will come right out.

1a. [Passanger Seat Leather] it's cracked and even broken at some parts...overall it's not disgusting and it's still comfortable to sit in...but it's nowhere near as nice as the rest of the car...how much does it cost to have it restitched/restored? Or should i just look into buying a whole new seat?

Do a search on leather kits. You can buy all new leather seat covers for $600 and either do the installation by yourself or have someone do it for you. It is not hard, but it is very time consuming. You will probably pay $1000 total if you let somebody else do it. Alternatively you could find a seat in better condition at a junkyard (www.car-part.com) or eBay.

I have no idea about this, and have not heard of this as a problem. Do a search, I believe there is a thread currently on top today that is dealing with an odometer problem. Replacement clusters are cheap, go eBay if you decide that route, but it will not show correct mileage.

That is normal behavior. RPMs have fluctuated on my car at idle since my car was purchased in 1993. Some will say that is caused due to low coolant or air in the system. You could try bleeding the air. Try searching for user 'jetdoc' and you will find a post with detailed instructions on bleeding out air.

White smoke is normal at startup and until engine gets up to operating temperature. No need to freak out unless it smells like coolant.

This might sound stupid, but have you adjusted the guage console brightness via the dimmer knob? It also controls the lighting of the climate control when the lights are turned on. Could be yours is turned all the way down.

You should make sure that the 90,000 mile service was done, and it's probably time to do it again anyway pretty soon or now. That involves the timing belt and the water pump. These are interference engines so if the belt brakes the engines is screwed. Technically you are due for timing belt service at 180k, but if you don't have a record of it being done, then you should have it done immediately. Also check your radiator for leaks, bleed air out of the system, inspect brake fluid, make sure no calipers are sticking, changing the oil and filter, go underneath the car and check out the CV boots and the tie rod boots for tears.

2b. [Painted Trim] Another common theme with Hondas in general is this nasty black exterior trim that all of our cars seem to get from the factory. Duplicolor paint in a can with 3 or 4 coats nice and even then top it off with a Duplicolor clear coat. They mount it back on their car and nobody can tell the difference. Has anyone done this with their Legend? Pictures? Furthermore, where was the paint purchased (Kragen didn't have it)? And most importantly, is there anywhere with instructions on how to remove these exterior pieces

The short answer is NO. Don't go the duplicolor route. The Legend paint is hard to match is most cases and it will not look good. Also the Duplicolor will chip off eventually. Get it done at a shop, it won't cost too much. Most shops will not guarantee it because they can't figure out what kind of plastic it is and are afraid it will chip immediately. Tell them to use the same flexible primer as is used on the bumpers, seems to work well.

Can any of you offer any solutions for getting rid of the amber in my taillights? Lastly, I was thinking of baking my headlights and then spraying the inside black like my friend Greg did in...

Hahh.. bumper lights are on eBay in clear form too. No worries. Members here have blacked out headlights. You might also look into JDM headlights. Do a search for both these things. As for the back, a member here used to sell proper red tape but I believe he does not anymore. Sprung17 is in the process of making red/clear/red tails but that is mainly for the sedan and not expected for another year at the price of $300-$400/pr because of custom work. Either black out the tails or live with the amber. Its not that bad. Red tape just looks stupid iMHO.

Lowering a Legend 2-2.5 is stupid. Many disagree with me here, but the fact is the Legend has wide weel arches and when you lower the car you change the porportions to being very small clearance on top and a wide clearance on the side, which makes the car look stupid and looks like its packed full of people or riding on blown shocks.

You have several options for a more reasonable drop. You will need a camber kit for any kind of drop.

Konis & Stock Springs - not recommended. Search.
Koni Sport Kit - $618 on eBay, 1" or so drop. Members have reported positive experiences. You can set the Konis on full soft for OEM ride. Search.
Koni + H&Rs - Closer to 2" drop. Search.
Koni + Eibachs - ? drop. Search
Ground Controls - imitation coilovers. Work pretty well, but a pretty stiff ride, not luxury, adjustable drop.
JICs - hard to get Japanese true coilovers for $1200-$1500/pr. Jarring ride, evidentally.

You will need a camber kit. Ingalls camber kit is a piece of crap. SPC ball joints are the way to go, I believe $150 for the front axle, and you will need some shims on the back.

Search. Alot of threads about this. You might like the "GS" wheels that alot of people positively love. They are 16. Remember Legend wheels are 65mm offset stock. You need at least 48mm offset on the larger sizes. Legend center bore is 70.1mm. You can get wheels bored out to fit. Bored IS300 and TSX wheels are popular, I don't know for the coupe though.

I don't like flip up screens. Better to remove the OEM radio and install a carputer. Lookup member chris_gog and see his install. Very nice. Lilliput screen where the OEM radio used to be, very nice.

Haven't needed to. Nothing has broken on my car in the interior. You might try estore.honda.com for the assorted little bits. The big pieces are far too expensive. There is blue stuff on eBay right now. A few weeks ago somebody parted out an entire RP-19M TypeC car (same as mine) on eBay. You might want to do a completed search and get in touch with the guy.

If you tripometer works sporadicly, remove your guage cluster and try to problem solve it. You can usually tell whats not making contact. It looks something like this:

If both your tripometer and odometer are working sporadically, check this harness my finger is pointing too for proper contact. Also lubricate the wheels.

Puzzle anyone:

Hopefully MikeD will find this thread and give much more valuable information reguarding this issue.

EDIT: Just found 5a:
Buy a used cluster. You can roll the odometer backwards/forwards (but takes a long ass time)

Well I'm not reading 1/8th of what I could on this thread but what I did read the only thing I could help you with is the lighting. I ordered clear bumper lights off ebay for 12 bux, and they work perfect. I say instead of getting new clear corners get 1 piece JDM headlights and leave stock, they look soo much better than the 2 pieces. The tail lights should be painted all red except the reverse white of course, you can find a DIY on all of these by using the search.....my .02

Edit: It's easier than you think to get in the 14's . I have the same car as you to spec. I've got an intake and did coolant by-pass and got a 15.1 with a 2.3 60ft. With slicks its 14's easy. Oh, welcome to the forums.
