Well, this is a very nice forum, you all have.

So I'm the new very proud owner of a 94' type II red coup....But but within a month of owning it i soon realize I have a BHG, dam. All the tell tail signs of a legend spicific BHG, and was confermed by my very machanicly inclided friend, who is going to takle the job with me next week. There was just a couple things i needed help with:
First i need a good book for doing the job, any suggestions?
Next I was thinking about a cam upgrade but couldnt seem to find any.
and lastly, a bit off topic, i was wondering about a shorter automatic shifter.
thanx

Heya Welcome!

1. Helms manual is best book. Helms.com i htink

2. Cams.. no aftermarket for the legend. You'd have to make custom ones. (then you can hook me up right ;))

3. No automatic short shifter :/

Again, welcome!
The helms web site is www.helminc.com.

Welcome to the forum.

Plan a good 4 days on the HG job if this is your first time. The manual doesn't say anything about removing the knock sensors, but do so they break very easily. Be sure to replace the timing belt, water pump, and tensioner.
Unless you plan on doing the job yourself, you'll be better off doing a JDM Type II swap. Probably cheaper in the long run and there are some on here (myself included) that will tell you that BHG is a terminal illness for our engines in that it is never really completely fixed.

Sorry that this happened to you so soon but I had the same thing happen to my son's '91 Coupe and the JDM swap was the answer. Welcome to the Forum!

Listen to stevie most of the time! He strikes again with the right answer here. Go with a type ii engine swap for probably a little less than the BHG job. Type II motors add 30hp, and the JDM's appear to have a better HG life than our USDM.

Here's one on ebay: HELLUVa price actually. I almost paid $900 for mine before I decided to part her out....

If you need any other parts, as mentioned, I'm parting my Legend out. PM or e-mail me if you need anything I have almost a full car still available.

Welcome to the forum man!

:) Its all good.
Thanks for the replys, I had considered an engine swap but i just bought the car and have a limited amount of cash. As of right now the HG job is costing me about 450. I dont know too much about cars, but my friends a master mechenic
and in his words "it wont be too hard" so i have faith.

So is this HG problem due to engine design or a crappy gasket? I just ordered the upper HG set from advanced auto, will these gaskets be better than the acura or just as crappy/worse? Are there better gaskets out there? Also i read somwhere on this forum to over tork the head bolts to 60lbs does this sound like a good idea?
thanx

I don't know if I would go with Advance Auto for head gaskets on our Legends. Most Acura will charge over $500 for both sets. Please keep us posted on how yours turn out.
If your master mechanic friend doesn't think it's "too hard", he probably hasn't done one. He's gonna wish he'd have charged you $1K by the time he's through 'cause there's almost no room to work in the engine bay. It's almost easier to drop the rack & cradle, pull everything off the top side of the engine and drop the engine out the bottom using a lift. Good luck---

Yea, I dont know enough to really question him, but hes rebuild engines from scratch and done a bunch of headgaskets and hes had time to look over my engine so he seems to know whats hes getting into.

As for the Advance gasket set, it was 300 so if acura sells it for 500 seems like a normal acura markup. Is there a performance gasket, like a copper one my freind mentioned?

I'll keep it updated, craking it open on thurs night
thanx
His coupe already has the type II engine in it, since its a 94. Once he tackles the Head Gasket job, his motor should be set for a long time. I think you should make out fine. If you do it right, you shouldn't have any problems after you get done with it. I would recommend using Ishino gaskets which is the gasket company that makes the OEM gaskets for Honda. I used Rock Gaskets on mine, and the can has been running great since I changed the Head Gaskets on mine. Make sure that you have your heads checked by a machine shop to make sure they're not warped.
