newbie engine swap question

750 Views 7 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  accpilot
Hello everyone,

maybe its been answered before but I was unable to find it. is it posible to do a type I engine swap, and leave the transmission in the car? I have an engine coming and I will have to do this in my driveway, and I know the legend it a long ways away from my 1986 for truck. I dont like the idea of no wheels on the front and haveing to take the whole transmission out to do the swap. on the other hand if it wil only take 30 more minutes to get the trans out and over to the new engine, and leaving the trans in will add 6 hours to the job I will take the transmission out. thanks in advance

I did a motor swap without removing the transmission, it's possible.
Hey Flip, thanks for getting back to me. have you done it both ways? I just hate to get started and end up with a big mess.

Hahahah Nas. Sorry accpilot I have not done it both ways. I've only done it once and I didn't unbolt the tranny. Actually, what I did was remove the rack n pinion and dropped the motor from the bottom with the tranny still attached to the car.
Tha came out all wrong

So sorry guys, I guess I must have bee tired. I don't know if I could be that funny if I tried.

anyway, nasriaz if you could find the link, that would be great and I wil try not to bother or get too personal anymore.
I just yanked out mine with the tranny. I dont think it would be impossible to leave the tranny in but it was not difficult on an automatic to leave them attached. The hardest part was the exhaust and that will have to be disconnected anyway. The axels were a pain and those too will need to be disconnected. Mine is going back in this weekend.
let us know how it goes

Hey wolfalp, keep us posted on how it goes. I think when it comes time I am going to leave the transmission in the car.
