Overheating issue

My 1994 Legend has a weird issue. It usually runs fine, but sometimes it spontaneously will start to get hot. The temp gauge will slowly begin rising until it reaches about "8" or so, then stop, and then quickly drop back to normal. It will usually do this while I'm at a stop, but also sometimes while I'm driving. Thus far, it has never happened while I'm driving at full freeway speed. If you shut the car off, even for a couple of seconds, the temp will return to normal.
I know for a fact it is getting hot, and is not merely a gauge malfunction.
My mechanic replaced the radiator and thermostat, which did not help. Of course the stupid thing will not do it while it's at his garage. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.....

Seeping Head Gasket

I am sorry, but I agree with an earlier post. This problem is typical of a seeping (not quite blown yet) head gasket. It won't show up on a block test, especially if the engine is cold. It can be intermittent at idle or under load.

I know SR5Guy put up a test procedure for this on the .org website. I have seen this problem on 2 Legends that I have owned with similar symptoms. I replaced just about everything coolant related until I bit the bullet and pulled the heads to take a look. Sure enough, the start of a fail at cyclinder number 6 in the back passenger rear.

Good luck. If you find out it's something else I would love to hear a new mystery voodoo.

It's not too late to buy the kit minus the head gasket.

I'm not trying to tell ya what to do, but in the end you are going to need just about every gasket in that kit. And yeah, while you have the heads out you are probably going to want them cleaned up at a machine shop. Have them put the new valve guide seals in for you. I know you don't want to spend the money, and neither did I, but buying all those gaskets individually costs a lot more.

Yes, your sedan is a nice one. Keep up the good work.
