Potential New Legend Owner...

Hey all,

This is my first post here on this site. Id like to start off saying I have never owned an Acura before. I have owned a 94 Grand Cherokee 4.0L (Totaled), a 96 Toyota Camry (Sold) and currently a 98 Grand Cherokee 5.9L which is my daily driver. I commute a bit to and from work, so better gas mileage is more important than it normally would be to me.

I work with someone who will be leaving in a month to be with her fiance when he finishes up his training with the Army, and I have the chance to purchase her 1993 Acura Legend L for $300.

The vehicle was bought for her from a police auction for $500, and she has owned it the past 6 months. The outside of the vehicle is in pretty decent condition, under the hood is pretty clean and the vehicle is pretty rust free for its age and location. I live in the Pacific Northwest, we get lots of rain...

The interior needs TLC, but my attention is more on the parts of the car that make it move rather than the condition of the interior.

The D4 light currently flashes, and the speedometer randomly works, ceases to work then goes crazy. After a little bit of reading I found I need to replace the VSS, which is not a bit issue for me. The stereo deck doesn't get power, its an aftermarket one. I can deal with that easily myself. The check engine light is active and I will be dropping by my shop to see what codes it drops tomorrow afternoon. SRS, Brake Light and ABS lights are on, I think I will just replace the entire gauge cluster. The vehicle is odometer exempt anyways.

The big concern is the car randomly smokes, then it stops. Sometimes it smokes for a few minutes after it driving awhile, then other times you can drive it for quite awhile and get no smoke.

Tomorrow after work I will be taking it to O'Reilly's Auto Parts and getting a few things....

Fuel Treatment
Fuel Injector Cleaner
Engine Sealant
Possibly Spark Plugs...
Octane Booster

Maybe clean up the throttle body?

The engine runs strong, floor it and you get alot of wheel spin in 1st gear. Lots of little kick in this car!

Looking for ideas, input, questions, concerns.

Will this be a decent daily driver and worth the $300 I am getting it for? Or could this possibly be something that is over my head?

There good cars I don't have slot of trouble out of mine and I have 2 that is the VSS sensor I had to do the same. Look on here of how to check for codes Its easy so there shouldn't be too much of a problem oh by the way Welcome
Hecks yea I would buy it. Considering the money you bought it for a few hundred dollars more would make it a steal. And this site has allot of info and can assist you in bringing it back to good health. The smoking could just be the valve seals which is very common in our cars as they age. If the smoke is white and smells sweet it could be a blown headgasket. Check the coolant for any traces of oil. And check the oil and see if its milky. If the oil dipstick is burned the car has overheated before.
The smoke is blueish, it comes out randomly, sometimes alot, sometimes a little, sometimes it doesnt smoke at all. Smells like oil, my old Camry would leak and burn oil on a massive scale but it never smoked. I am guessing its a valve issue? I put some block sealant in and in "200 miles" we will see if that worked at all.

Dipstick is clean as is the oil, coolant was fine as well.

I know alot about Jeep's and Toyota's but not much about Acura. This will be a learning experience on its own!
welcome your right across the columbia river from me , hope your legend enjoyed the sun today
Valve seals need to be replaces and if your doing that do head gaskets only use oem or felpro.
sounds like a deal to me, you cant go wrong with that price, these cars last forever! mine has 212844 on the clock, only re did the top end of the motor, valves, seals, gaskets stuff like that, original AT trans and it shifts perfect. you cant kill these cars :werd:
