Question for those with Projectors

To all of you that have done the projector upgrade. Does the outter clear plastic lens effecting your cuttoff. I am asking this because audi projectors are suppose to have a lot of color change when going over bumps and during normal driving. But i am not getting that much of this. I think it is affected by the horizontal lines in the inside of the lens cover. My cutoff shines rite through one of the lines and im thinking it is diffusing the light being shined through it. Anyone know if there is a way to shave those lines off.

I think he replaced the glass diffuser rite behind the bezel. im talking about the plastic cover that goes over the whole headlamp housing. the glass diffuser i just tossed.

Hmm... It would be interesting to see if those lines can be removed, but I don't see how.

The only way I can figure is to gently sand it off and then somehow buff the lines that remain so that they blend in with the rest of the plastic.
thats the plan. gonna try to do it when i open up my lights again to put in my cosmetic trim from a e46.

yea i got the plastic silver piece that says XENON on it from a e46. Gonna use it to cover up the mess i made while putting in the projectors.
Fut: what email? didnt get one from u.

What do you mean by color change? I guess I haven't noticed it with my lights.

Legend95, I emailed you about meeting up.

I don't think the lines make a difference in color changes. If you park in front of a wall and shine your projectors at it, on the cutoff line you should see the purple light near the edge, if it shows then I am sure oncoming cars will see the color changes too.

Maybe your mounted projectors are off angled. My colors are like those of the S2k and the new X-Type jags.

you should notice. a4 projectors have alot of color change. if you look at your cutoff at eye level, you should see lots of dark blue, purple, and other colors. i did not recieve a email from you about meeting up. guess my box was full.

I see the purple light at the edge. but it looks somewhat scattered. i just took a physics class on optics and during lab we did an experiment with shinning a laser through a gratting. the lines act as a gratting and will scatter the light. i was at my friends house yesterday. we tested a e39 projector, audi tt projector, e46 projector all had a non scattered distinct cutoff. this further leads me to believe that the lines is causing the problem. i will try to open my headlights tomarrow and try to shine the projector without the cover on.

Oh, I guess you guys are talking about the prism effect at the cutoff point. I get it really nicely on the driver side, but not on the passenger side. I think my passenger side one was missing the shield, so I had to make one myself. The cutoff is still great, but it doesn't have as nice a prism effect as on the driver side.

Legend95, I'm going to try and meet up with Fut tomorrow. I also have Monday off. Email me at ajlin@ucla.edu if you want to hook up.

Matt, any thoughts on this?

Do you guys think it is safe to follow speeddemons tutorial on polishing headlights to get rid of those lines. does anyone know why they put those lines on the inside of the headlights for?

The lines do not affect your beam pattern one bit. The color changes you see when an HID equipped car is approaching you and hits bumps are called "Chromatic abberations". They are only noticeable to oncoming traffic. I know they are very exciting to see, I wish I could see it when I hit bumps.

Don't worry about getting rid of the lines!!

Am I understanding correctly what you are asking other than if the lines hinder beam pattern?

Not the beam pattern but the prism effect. My cuttoff shines rite through the lines. I was wondering if this diffused some of the color concentration. I see a rainbow of colors at the cutoff, but they look slightly diffused. I was thinking this was due to those lines. Anyways, when i remove the cover to fix my trim i will shine the projector on the wall to see if it does indeed effect the color.
