Radiator caps for 92 legend

something to ponder;
I was losing anti-freeze, and thought it was a head gasket. Luckily it was my old cap, rubber was worn so when I stepped on the gas, fluid rushed up past the cap, into the overflow container, but spilled out of it after it overfilled it.

I was surprised, I had a cap that fit perfectly! Rubber was good... but it was for a 1984 1100 Honda Magnum (cycle radiator). If the chit fits, wear it!

So I tried it, but the same thing happens... works great at idle, when filled with anti-freeze, But if I step on the gas (or cruising at highway speeds) it squirts out.

So I'm on the hunt for a new cap, but wondering if it's normal to have that much pressure from the water pump setting off the cap release? Car has 230,000+ miles and runs like brand new! :bigok:

It depends on the cap pressure release spring. The Legend (OEM) radiator should use a 0.9 but I do have a couple of caps with 1.1 on them too so I'm not 100% sure which it should be. There is no way the pump is creating that much pressure, the pressure is only created by the coolant heating up and expanding or by a BHG pushing air from the cylinder into the coolant passages.
thanks guys = 16lbs reads the new cap (NAPA $8)
Your welcome, I would've went to a Honda/Acura dealer. Most members have had nothing but trouble with aftermarket caps. GL

You are correct as always!

Same thing happens with this new cap... No leaks, idles fine!
But step on the gas, and anti-freeze shoots out the overflow tube.
I know this radiator has been replaced, so I was wondering if it needs a different sized cap?
sounds like I just need the OEM cap, eh?
When it comes to the cooling system OEM or nothing. Also make sure no air is in the system. (Bleeding properly is crucial!)
I know why I'm getting too much pressure in the cooling system....

At 1:00-2:00 he explains why I'm not leaking, but why it's coming out the overflow full force when reving...

 BHG = Not Good!
Well before you jump to conclusions get a hydro carbon test done. Legends have several symptoms that seem like other problems. If your not over heating....

I bought this as my "winter beater"/"emergency car" because it runs like brand new and was really cheap!
Now I have driven this for 2 years, but I only drove it on short trips (5 minutes usually-15 minutes max) So I've barely put on 3,000 miles.

It lost coolant before a few times, so I just kept refilling, thinking it had a small leak.
The coolant looked frothy white when I got it. I thought it was from a "Coolant Sealer" product they may have thrown in it... nope, it was oil the whole time!

Some times I would know the coolant was low because of the bouncing idle.

Only twice did the car get over halfway HOT on the temp guage- both times I was on LONG trips (over 1/2 hour)
-this is probably because they removed the thermostat to try a "Liquid HG sealer"

Knowing the series of all my events now, it looks like a classic BHG....

Of course, since I live in Saltland, Mn- it's completely rusted around all fenders- so the body is SHOT! and doesn't support rebuilding engine or swap.
So- What's it worth in todays market?
New signals, brakes, fuel pump, too much to list, etc... :snipe:

Well from the description 500.00 if that.

That's exactly what I expect to get. Sucks that I just put all new brake system in... and tires, oh well.

I did call a few shops to see what they would charge to do the HG...
- 1 said "No way" - LOL ...the other said $1200 to start... so no go.

I looked at the DIY write ups for hours.... Not!
...Im not a good mechanic, and I'd have to invest in more tools than car! (live out in the sticks, so renting tools is not a good option)

I'll ask $700 or B.O. on craigslist- but take $500. I hope someone nibbles.
Thanks for all the help-
