I'm going to say the "stop light switch" There's a plunger on the end and my guess is it's stuck. I'd try freeing it and if that doesn't work replace it.

Rear Taillights Stay On?
Ok, so I finally got some time to mess with my legend and work on the start-up problem, but no when I put the car on the sipper charger to charge up the battery, I noticed that the rear tail lights stay on, I can't turn them off without d/c the battery. Just happened recently, any idea what could be causing it?

it also may be the rubber grommet thing on the brake pedal itself it pushes the plunger in. mine basically fell apart on both my legend and civic. auto parts stores dont seem to carry them, guess its a dealer item... my quick fix on legend was take 2 dimes tape them together then tape them to the spot where the rubber grommet used to be. I have a 91 Legend. I recently changed my brakes that were worn down to the metal. (very bad I know) replaced the pads, not the rotors. I did not disconnect the battery. After replacing the pads, I noted that the brake light stayed on and could not take the car out of park without using the key. Low of fluid, added some. After that noted the brake lights were not working. I replaced the switch (the one that is just behind the brake pedal); did not fix either of the issues.
It sat thorugh the winter, the alternator went up, replaced it over the weekend. When I first put it on, I could shift the car from park to drive without the key. Now the brake lights stay on after the car is off. Drained the battery. Jumped the car not the shift issue is back.
At this point I am lost and want to drive my ride. Please help!

If the lights are stuck on make sure the plunger (rubber black piece isn't stuck in or missing.)
Its been a lil while, but when I couldnt shift out of park without using key-release by shifter, I believe the prob was a blown fuse for the brake lights. U can check release by turning key to On position (dont start up) and pressing then releasing brake pedal, LISTENING for engagement/disengagement of the Shift Lock Release feature. If u hear nothing and have no brake lights...swap-out the fuse. Even if not Blown, fuses sometimes get "tarnished" contacts, which could cause intermittent problems.I have a 91 Legend. Brake-lights staying on sounds like a sticking switch...have u tried WD40??
Bigboy - I had not checked for a plunger; is that on the switch that disengages the shifter i replaced, but did not seem to solve the problem.
Urban Legend - i will double check, but I am sure that I changed the fuses, no harm in checking them/replacing them again....update tomorrow night on both soutions....

Where do I find the plunger
Sorry for being such a noob but my tail lights are staying on and this happend suddenly. My car had been sitting for awhile and battery died. When i got a new battery all of a sudden the tail lights stay on.
Does anyone have a picture of what the plunger looks like. I looked at everything behind the brake pedal and it all looks just fine. Please help!
