Rebuilt Rack and broken clock spring.

1067 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  JaymeLee
I recently had the rack and pinion replaced on my 94 Legend LS Type II with a rebuilt unit. The first one that my mechanic installed was defective and he had to replace it with another one. This one works much better, but I don't think it came from a 94 Legend LS Type II. The turning radius on the car is now 2 to 3 feet wider than it was before. I can live with this. My question is could the fact that it may not be the correct unit have caused my clock spring to break? I could see that it might if the turning radius was smaller but not bigger. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Jayme

Clock springs tend to wear out over time.
If it takes you more turns now to go from "lock to lock" that would cause clock spring failure.
Plus make sure the rack is centered!
Lock to lock

I checked my lock to lock rotations on the rack and it's just under 3.5 turns. If someone could check theirs and let me know I would appreciate it.
