$100 to put in a set of motor mounts:(
Hmm, I asked my mechanic friend to look up the rates, and it says the book calls for 6 hours @ $55 an hour.... I don't know! I will have money by the end of the month to do it. I looked under my car at my "new" axle and it has some grease on it, like it is leaking it?! Oh well, I guess I will have my mechanic look at it on Monday.

If you need a hand with anything, I just put a new axle in and haven't had any problems. It was a NAPA unit and worked real well. If it's your motor mount, I'd think any shop could put that in for less $, come on...6 hours! You can PM me if you need a hand, I could take a look.

HELLO! I haven't seen you on here before! I must see your car!! We need a little Utah meet sometime, would you come?

About the axle, my mechanic friend will put the new axle in free, and for the motor mounts, he won't charge me that, that is just what his book says. Are you ever near 4100 South State? I work right around there...

Now my car is worse!! The shaking isn't only on accelerating, but while just driving, or sitting still!! When I am sitting still it feels like the idle is too high, but it is around 700 rpm, Any ideas? I am going to get another axle installed on Monday, but what about the shaking while just sitting still?? If I put the car in nuetral the shaking stops!! Is this just coincedence with the axle being changed, cause I don't know why an axle would have an effect of shaking when sitting still....
bad inner joint on one or both axles. tell your mechanic to get another set of axles.

do not run the car in gear while wheels are up in the air. this will damage the wheel bearings and axles too.

are u sure about that:werd:
the most that can happen is your tranny or engine getting messed up from the high rpms. but you would have to be an idiot to push your car to that limit while the wheels are off the ground.:giggle:

Question: How do the axles effect the vibrating when the car is sitting still and the axle aren't even in use?? I am more toward the motor mount idea now. I am getting it checked tomorrow, and it will be fixed while I am on vacation to California Sept 22......

I am on state street all the time. We'll have to meet sometime. Anyway, I think I need a new clutch kit sometime soon...sigh...I just get some rattling noises whenever the clutch is out at idle, and also in gear at the low rpm range. Probably the release bearing, I hope everything else looks all right. If you've got any ideas for a good kit, let me know. I need a few good connections.

when u mean the wheels being up u mean once i put da gear in drive?cuz ma car 'jumps up' wen i up on gear

This happened to me!!!!

The problem is the installation of the axle. I was changing the driver side axle on my 92L but I couldn't get the axle nut loose so I took it to the local shop to see if they could break it loose. They used a 3/4 in. impact gun on it and got it. They said they would go ahead and swap out the axle for $65. I said do it. I had the reman. axle with me. When I got in my car to leave I noticed a strange vibration when I started it up, just sitting in the parking lot. I drove it down the street and it vibrated as I accelerated. I took it back, they put it on the rack and looked it over. The said engine mounts probably needed replacing. Since I didn't buy the axle from them I was stuck with their diagnosis. I bought another axle and installed it myself. I had a very hard time removing the axle that the shop installed for me. It turns out that they had drove the axle in too far. It has a snap ring on it. It's supposed to be inserted until the ring snaps into the grove. The axle is supposed to "float". If you drive it in with a 10 lb. sledge hammer it doesn't "float". It becomes a solid metal connection between the engine-differential-suspension. You will be able to feel every vibration from the engine. I put the new axle in like it's supposed to be and it worked fine. Take it back and have them remove the axle and reinstall it gently. like the book says. Watch to see how much trouble they have removing it. It should come out easy if it was installed right. To be safe have them install another new axle. I do all my own maintenance and the one time I have someone else do it I get burned.

Let us know how it works out. If that does fix your problem, this would be a major break through on this problem.

Keep us updated.

Just to make sure we feel the same kind of vibration/symptom, can you try this: Put your car in gear, vibration should be there. Put it in nuetral, vibration almost completely goes away. Put it in park and vibration is as strong as when in gear.

Thanks!!!!

if you're in drive, the axles are being used.

I agree about the ham fisted mechanics who don't seem to know what a torque wrench is, however, having gone through the reman axle nightmare myself, I'm inclined to suggest that it quite possibly was a bad reman axle you got.

this car seems to be particularly susceptible to the slightest wear on the inner-joints.

I agree that reman. axles are not the best quality and I have had problems with them also. I fully expected the axle to be the problem. I inspected the axle in question after removing it and found it in good condition. The fact that I had to use excessive force to remove it and that a new vibration was evident without even moving the car brought me to the conclusion that the shaft of the axle had been forced into the differential. I had changed the other side about a month earlier and it came out easy. I may be wrong but my 18 years of heavy aircraft maintenance experiance told me something wasn't right with the installation. You bring up a good point about reman. axles. Inspect them fully before leaving the store, make sure the splines are not worn down. I got one that was so bad that the hub would not go on.
The rebuild machinery was hitting the splines during rebuild and mashing them flat. The inner and outer joint/knuckle should be firm but not too tight.

which insane "madchanic" drives in a axle with a hammer:mad:
driveing it in with a hammer will push the cv joints in on the shaft to far down and that will cause the joints not to flex

I put in another remanufactured one. Under warranty of course. I bought the replacment axle before I removed the axle in question. It's too much work not to replace it since I had another one there.

I showed my mechanic this and he said you are full of___,, I was like NO, he has the EXACT same problems as me, and he fixed it by installing the axle the right way. So, we got a new axle, and he made me watch him the whole time...He said that if the shaking does go away that it was because of a bad axle and not the way it was put in. So, he got my old axle out with just a tug, and he put the new one in without a problem, very easy. He did it in 10 minutes, then I started my car and.....NO SHAKES, no shaking during acceleration or anything. I don't think my axle was installed wrong, but just a bad reman. However, I think you may have a point that some are put in too far....

Anywho, I am happy!!!
