it's a 91LS. 170k miles on the body, and apparently 67k on a replaced type 1 motor. he says it needs a new steering rack, and that it will cost me a grand to fix that. he wants just under $3k. 'forest green', automatic.... it's in decent shape inside and out....

sounds like a little more than I would pay,due to the 1k repair you will do...but that is my opinion.

That car is in the Washington DC area, saw it on craigslist. I was going to pursue it but it's an auto. You should try to get him to come down on the price.

I'd say no more than $1750. That's a lot of work you'd be committing to, plus all the unknowns...

If the interior and exterior is in mint I mean 8-10, I would offer him $2,500 but if he won't budge, I might even pay what he wants. I happen to like the forest green/tan combo on a coupe and a rack n pinion job I can do myself. You also get a relatively low mileage motor. So it pretty much depends on how the inside and outside look. Just my two cents because in the end, the car is worth what you the buyer is willing to pay.
