Hey guys I have a 93 acura legend with 184,000 on it from time to time I get with smoke coming out of the tail pipe some time a little and some alot, most of the time none at all I asked a freind of mines about it he said its probably valve guide seals, I was wondering if it could be oil rings gone bad anyne else ever experience this problem with theirs?

u might be burning coolant.....

An interior leak (head, head gasket or block, expensive)

Or it could just be moisture in the system due to humid conditions (not expensive, nothing to fix)

Does this white smoke smell of antifreeze, if so its definitely an internal leak

Hope this helps

Its just funny......................

I have had my car for a long time now since it had 70,000, had oil changed regulary and kept it tuned and everything, but once I hit 180,000 its seems like alot of little stuff is just starting to happen. The day after I hit 180,000 my ignition switch went I fixed that,Then may radio LCD screen dimmed and stayed that way, then I heard clicking noise to find that one of my axle boots was gone and dried out so I am changing the axles and lower ball joints. Then one of the dam core wire harness's went bad which was a lucky fix to even find but I reseated contacts and fixed that. Now I am faced with two deliamas the smoke things is one I hope it is the valve guide seals when I change them because that is work believe me. And last night I notice that my temp gage always sits right below half point well last night I was I in a fast food line and it drifted up to maybe 2 bars before the red zone, then the fan kicked in and it when right back to below the halfway point and held steady and didnt do it again. The funny thing was it did the same excact thing a week ago at the same fast food stop, go figure and has never reapeated itself until last night maybe thermostat or something but as soon as the fan kicked in it was fine maybe it should have kicked in earlier. But I do love my car but dam it seems that after the 180 point for me its all down hill. HAHAHAHAH

Thermostat

I had the same problem that you are having with the thermostat. I had it go up to the H and than back to normal. It would keep on fluctuating and than fan would keep bringing it back down. It did get bad at times where even the fan would not cool it down. Before they try to tell you that it is your head gasket or anything crazy like that, like they tried to tell me, check the thermostat housing. It may need to be changed. Let me know how it goes.

Survey says...

if it smokes at idle and when you pull off from a stop & get a big puff of white smoke, it's valve stem seals. Had the same problem last year and got the job done by an independent Acura tech along with timing belt, WP, crank angle sensor & O2 sensors for about 13 Benjamins. Not attractive to people who are light of wallet---

I have a 1992 L Sedan that when I would let it idle, no smoke. Then after idling for 3-5 minutes I would rev the engine and I would then get smoke. If I just let it warm up for about 30-60 seconds and then drive, there is no smoke. It doesn't seem to be loosing oil or anti-freeze but I have had the car for only one month. Any ideas out there?

okay you guys are sayin that the smoke is white... white smoke is antifreeze.

BLUE is oil check you smoke again. if it is in fact a SUPER HYPER WHITISH BLUE then its your valve guides but first check. cause it could be you HG if it overheats like you said, but im not implying anything just yet.

just CHECK your smoke once more.

WHITE Antifreeze

Sup guys

When I start my car at its idling sometimes it goes hot!!
usually with no smoke yet. After a few minutes and i rev the motor POOF! White smoke and blue! It usually blows out and i never see it after that until the car sits and i guess it builds up in the engine. Is there a test i can do to tell what is wrong b4 I spend majoe cream. I called Paragon Acura to get a quote on HG job & they rold me $2,800!!!!!

Hi

Ok blue smoke is not antifreeze, its to do with the oil.

The dealer usually asks u to bendover, doesnt mean u have to do it. Look for an acura or honda specialist. Should cost u half of what the dealer quoted u.

Take care

re: head gasket problems.

alright guys, I am currently on my second legend, and the first legend i owned; had the head gasket problem and my mechanic changed my head gasket for 1200.00 Then it blew on me again...and he checked it out and realized that the head had a crack in it.......

he rebuilt the head for me as well as changed my gasket again for just 150 additional. After that it ran like new....If you want the number i can give you the heads up...his shop is in corona new york.

but anyhow...i have since sold that legend and have a new one. I think i might have the same problem again...my radiator fluid is disappearing in my reserve tank. I....need to keep refilling it...i'm gonna try to avoid the hg fix by just checking my radiator fluid levels weekly...

also i also have the white smoke problem when i idle too long.........guys if you want to delay the HG from blowing i suggest you just stay on top of the radiator and monitor the coolent levels frequently.

good luck!!!

If you are losing coolant, you have a leak. Period. It is either (a) radiator, (B) water pump gasket, (C) hoses or (D) BHG. First thing is to do a COMPLETE cooling system check. If all of that checks out, you have a blown head gasket. Your choices then are to either have a HG job, new/used USDM engine or a used JDM engine. Personally, I will tell you to go find a used JDM with 30-40K miles and find a competent indie Acura tech to do the swap. Either way, you are looking at about a minimum $2000 expenditure. Good luck---
