So here's the story behind the sale of my legend.

I had previously tried to sell it in early August, but then I was involved in an accident and put the sale on hold while i worked it out with the insurance company. In the end, my claim was denied, and I put the car back together myself.

Before it was repaired, I got a call from one of the guys here on the forum (he's a lurker, 0 posts.) he said he was interested in it and would call me back in a week, and he asked about my final price. I said that I was originally asking around 4k for it, but since it was in an accident, I wanted 3,000/firm. He said this price sounded good to him and that he would take it provided that it passed Maryland inspection. I told him that I would be asking more later, because I was planning on fixing it. I fixed, it and the guy called me 2 weeks later and asked if he could see it. I said that would be fine and met up with him.

He showed up, drove the car, and liked it. I told him I wanted $3300 for it since I fixed it. He offered me 26 (obvious lowball offer, even though he said he'd give me my asking price if it was described accurately). I told him that wasn't reasonable, joked around, and he finally agreed with me at 2800$. AFTER we shook hands, he said that the offer was contingent upon the car passing Maryland inspection, and that he would give me a deposit but it would have to be refundable, and that he would pick up the car in about a week, and he told me not to advertise the car anywhere else. Not the quick sale I was looking for...I only accepted his offer because I thought it would be just that; a quick sale.

This, to me, was not a binding agreement. The whole point of a deposit is that it is not refundable. A deposit is given so the seller is sure that the buyer will not back out and not waste time. I was under the impression that he was going to pay me on the spot and take the car (after he repeatedly said something like "i'll throw the cash in yo face.."). I reluctantly left with the car. We both knew that the car would not pass inspection because the horn didn't work, and i got the feeling he was just wasting my time, and was going to lowball me yet again.

For the next few days, I re-listed the car here on the forum, and on Craigslist for 3500. Two days later, he called me and asked me why I had re-listed it. I told him that the car was still for sale because he had not given me a deposit, therefore, the agreement was non-binding. he said (and I quote) "alright, fuck it then if you're going to be like that.." I said that if he wanted the car, he should give me a serious deposit and not waste my time. I explained to him the point of a deposit. He said "okay fine, I'll come by tomorrow"

Later that day, a girl came and took a look at my car. She offered me 3200$, and we agreed at 3300$. I texted him and told him that I got an offer at 3300, and that I would have to take it.

He called me, and was obviously mad. He cursed me out, said I was a punk bitch, etc etc. He wouldn't let me explain or anything, and then hung up on me. I called him back, no answer. I texted him and told him that I was offered 500$ more, and the girl was ready to take it that day. She was serious, he wasn't. He replied, cursing me out, and made fun of my "trash talking." I told him that There was no need to trash talk, and that he would probably have done the same thing. He felt stupid and didn't respond.

I felt good. He felt stupid. I was the more mature one, even though he was easily twice my age (I'm 18). He stopped texting me and felt stupid. (no doubt he'll respond in this thread. I will not mention his name). I never cursed, despite being insulted over and over again through text messages (because you know, thats what tough guys do :giggle:)

ANYWAYS. So the girl finally came back and dropped off the rest of the money today. I had let her take the car last week (10/8) with my tags because she had to sell her car to carmax before she would have all of the money for me. I know this was probably not the best way to handle it, but I trusted her. (I made copies of her license, knew were she lived, etc etc). I don't know how I feel just yet. I'm a carless pedestrian :(.

Here are pics of the legend. 1994 GBP Acura Legend 4DR Automatic. 162k miles.

here she is when I first got her (I had just put on the tint, remote start, bra, sunroof cover, and fixed the BHG)

After the accident:

Repaired (changed all turn signals, fixed the old bumper)

and of course, the money shot:

(the cigar and lighter are leftovers from my birthday:giggle: )

haha

thanks for the imput guys.

I don't feel bad, you guys are exactly right. I feel like i did the right thing. he said that if the car was as-described, he'd give me my asking price. the car was as described, and he still low-balled me.

I'm really glad I didn't sell it to him. that would have been a 500$ loss!!

i lol'd about him catching feelings too.

I've been promised cars over the phone and driven to see them, only to find out they were already sold. I've never been belligerent/rude/stupid the way he was to me towards other sellers. There's no reason to talk trash.

Man, fuck em!

The only reason I have such harsh feelings towards these type of guys is because I post cars for sale (only legends) on craigslist which bombards my cellphone with idiotic perspective buyers. It drives me insane dealing with people who are interested in the car, but don't have the money. I've never sold a car (3 total this month) to anyone who did not immediately schedule a visit.

A true buyer will do the following:
a. CAll to schedule a visit
b. test drive/look over/carfax
c. ask questions/view clean title
d. negotiate
e. Provide purchase date/leave deposit
f. Buy

If the caller is asking a lot of questions, he's not really interested. A true buyer will want to immediately see the vehicle and will ask all necessary questions onsite.

Very smart to make it rain in your room.

Me and my brother buy and sell a lot of cars, usually between 5-8 a month. We mostly buy to ship overseas to places like Pakistan, Afghanistan, Dubai, a few places in eastern Europe, etc. etc. Sometimes we accidentally buy something we can't ship for some reason or another, so I'm forced to sell it here, usually on CL. I run into the same idiots. People call/email and offer half or less than what you're asking, give you fake sob stories, and set up appointments and never show up.

I don't answer emails/calls from people who email me with stuff like this:

-what is your last price? (i hate bargaining before someone's seen the car, because they always try to bargain again when they get here. the only exception is if someone is coming from far away)
-can you tell me more about the car? (no you idiot, i posted everything in the ad!)
-is this still available (yes, or the ad wouldn't be up. I always say "If you see this ad, the car is still for sale")
-will you take payments? (if the bank, your mom, brother, uncle, neighbor, etc. doesn't trust you, why should I?)
-I will give you $_____ cash today!!! (I will tell you to go away)
-Please hold this car for me until ______. (no. first come first serve, sorry.)

these are just some of the normal offers I get. Someone actually called me once and had the audacity to offer me 500$ on a 89 E30 that was an original owner car. I was asking 2200$. I normally hold on to these people's numbers and call them at 3-4 in the morning :giggle:

Buyer etiquette really needs some work these days.

Whenever I buy a car, I always say some of the following things:

-I can take it today/tomorrow or whenever you are ready
-I have cash and am a serious buyer
-I will inspect it myself, no need to take it to a mechanic or have my uncle or dad or baby brother or whatever look at it
-I only haggle on the phone if the car is a long distance away. I always say I would be happy to take it at $____, provided it is as-described.
-I have a tow dolly and can haul it away if it is not driveable
-Transaction will be over in 1/2 an hour at the most.
-I am never pushy. If I offer something that they don't like, or we can't come to an agreement, I always say call me back if you change your mind, good luck with the sale.

I mentioned the last one ^^ because someone called me and offered me 700$ less than what I was asking on a 1000$ car. After I told him no, he said "that car is a fuckin piece of shit! you should junk it!"....wtf?

I was on the other end of a deal like that - I was totally serious and had an agreement to buy my 94. I arranged financing and had the check in hand, and was going to head down to pick up the car the next day. The seller called me and told me he'd had a higher offer and was going with that guy. Wow I wasn't happy, but I decided to hold onto my temper - I told the seller to let me know if it fell through.

It did, and I got the 94.
I didn't sell it to the other person necessarily because of the higher offer, but because they seemed more serious and were ready to buy. if I had a deposit, i wouldn't have advertised it. I would be mad if i was in your position; and I have been in your shoes.

Glad you got your 94 though!

SHIT TALKING VIA TEXT MSG'S?!?!? YOU KIDS THESE DAYS.....
haha. I wasn't shit talking ;)

i'm sure he was AT LEAST 10 years older than me!

so why did you sell such a nice GS anway?
I sold it because I didn't have the money to maintain it and I didn't want it to break down and have to repair it. I figured I should get out while I was on top, (not that there was anything wrong with it) before I started losing more money on it. gas was killer too :(

Wow, I only just read this thread. Way to stick to your guns quanaman! 1st guy was utter deadbeat, glad you found a real buyer. Now get to work finding another Legend ;)
I'm not necessarily looking for another legend unless I get a super good deal or find a 6/5 speed (who here wouldnt?). I'm really in the market for an integra, but will probably take anything that is cheap and good on gas for the time being. In the future though, I will be int he market for a minty GS again.

i looked for an integra as a cheap beater car to get me to work and back....they aren't very gas efficient bro.....almost the same as the legend yet it takes regular gas
Are you sure?

I figured the engine and body are a lot smaller so it should be better. The tank on them is also only 13 gallons so you get less miles to the tank, but better MPG, no?
