Steering Wheel Swap????

3096 Views 22 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  mondonalds
Has anyone ever changed their steering wheel out? I found a steering wheel with better leather and am thinking about swapping it out, but am worried about getting around the air bag. How likely will it blow up in my face?

It wont just disconnect your battery and you should be good
there is a jumper under the steering wheel, unplug the harness and use the jumper that is with it.

Here's a link to a post MikeD made about removing the driver's airbag. I wouldn't consider it too difficult. As long as you follow the precautions, the risk involved is very minimal.

Wow, thanks for all the quick responses. It looks like I may try and do this, the new steering wheel doesnt have an airbag, so I will be using the old one.
ya you should use your old one you never know if the one you get with the steering wheel would be good some people. To rip people off will have ones that have already been opened or activated with an accident. And just cut the bag out and stuff it with newspaper shreds or paper and seal them up. belive me i work at a body shop and seen that a couple times. so if you ever get a new steering wheel with Air bag you should get it checked by pro or use your old one. unless you buy from a company. than if they do do that you can just sue

I found a steering wheel today, its in pretty good shape, off a 93 sedan, just like mine. It has no airbag, so I will have to remove the airbag from my steering wheel and put it on the replacement.

Amen. Probably easier than changing the oil IMO. Just be careful with the clock spring, that's a fragile and expensive part.
In the service manual, it says to use new torx bolts. Do I need to use new ones and I assume I can get them from the dealer?

Also, where is the short connector located?

Yes. It's 2x T30. Usually you need new ones. Presupposed they are kinda worn out. If it's your first swap ever, you really don't need new ones. -Mike

This one is under the steering wheel behind the lid, what is held with 2 small screws. After removing you can see the red short connector. Pics ;) ? -Mike

Please don't forget: MAKE SURE TO DISCONNECT YOUR BATTERIE !!!

Hi Nick ;)
sorry of the long absence. Will come back next year as usual, but probably with half power. Because it's not easy for me to be on our Honda forum and parallel to be here aboard. The language barrier is sometimes too hard for me, you know :giggle: Let's see, my friend ;) -Mike
