In California, would it be illegal, when they do the Visual Inspection test?

I was told buy an emissions inspector in Folsom, CA that if they see any kind of modification whatsoever (intake thats not CARB approved, turbo, SC, etc...) the second they pop the hood they will fail ya right there.

Of course this all changes if you throw a bejamin at em... :D

I think the you need to bring your car to a state referee when:

- your car didn't pass smog (either sniffer test or visual)
- your car is being re-registered after being listed as a non-registered vehicle
- you are registering a salvaged car for the first time.

I've never had to go to a state referee before and I'm sure that there isn't a requirement to go every few years.

Or when you do an engine swap.

Wierd? I hear they pick randomly

My uncle got a letter when he renewed his registration (CAR was already registered) that said

TEST ONLY..
State Facility.
Then they provide you with address to take it to

So did my uncle, who lives quite a distance from them after 4 years

I answered my own question, this is what I've learned.

Random Picking Rules

15% Of vehicles are put into a computer that picks at random which vehicles go get tested at a State "Test Only" center.

Here's how it works.

If your car has ever failed smog, you're in the 15% of the pool
If your vehicle TYPE fills a "High Standard" of emissions (i.e performance vehicles etc..) You're in the pool

AN ADDITIONAL 2% OF ALL vehicles are chosen at complete random.
