Texas Inspection

Hello after years of continued use without any major problems my 93 Legand failed the state inspection with a high NOx(ppm) of 1005 passing level was 796
at driving conditions rpm 2864
any suggestions on how to correct this without spending an arm or a leg ?
Thank You

Well, a few questions first. How many miles are on the car? Do you have a check engine light on? Are you experiencing any other symptoms of the problem?

When was your last tuneup? Last timing belt change? Have you ever had the intake off to clean it?

there are 120k miles on the car the mechanic changed the timing belt and did an inspection, he changed the fuel filter and said the spark plugs are burning normally so there was no need to do a tune up. and the check light is not on.
the air filter was dirty and i changed that and ran some of that seafoam cleaner through the vacuum lines to help clean up the egr system i'll say it is running smoother today haven't checked the plugs yet.
it was missing some when at idle.
but that has seemed to cleared up.
i drive an hour to work one way and will see how it runs if running well i'll give it another shot at the inspection.
there was another fellow who posted his failed attempt and he used the seafoam and showed the results of pre and post diagnostic slips
i must say i was impressed his were worse than mine. crossing fingers
the old girl is like a tried and true battle tank. put the key in and she goes every time. wish she got better gas mileage .:bigok:

Your spark plugs should be changed at mileage/year intervals (depending on which comes first). The limits depend on the plugs, but I would change them in this case.
what type of fuel do you use, reg, premium? I bet your egr tube is clogged, also change the PVC valve.
The cleaning of the EGR and new spark plugs will most likely drop you down far enough to pass, if not then you need to replace your O2 sensors. I had a similar problem a few years ago and once I changed my O2 sensors my NOX dropped by 70%.
I should have read this before posting. Try new o2 sensors? And clean the egr how. Fron where it connects to the intake? That metal tube?

I use regular gas i have used premium in the past but regular runs fine and it has passed inspection in the past on regular.
going to pull the plugs in the morning and change them the air filter was full looks like it hasn't been changed since the last check up the company that does my oil changes should have changed it at the last change, looks like they didn't do that.
but it does run much better with the filter change and seafoam run through the vacuum lines.
i'm going to look into the cleaning of the egr tube and never thought of the pvc valve thank you

There is a metal tube that runs from the back of the EGR to the intake. You can clean the EGR itself or do the best method and clean the tube, the bracket, the EGR, and the lower plenum of the intake manifold.

From my understanding running regular is a cause behind clogged EGR Pipes/tubes. There has also been speculation that clogged EGR systems can be the cause of head gasket failures seen in our car.
