You can definitely remove the felt storage pocket from the console. If all else fails, replace it with a new one if it's not very expensive. Let me know what you come up with, I wouldn't mind changing the felt material to something else if it looked good. I find the felt gets dirt trapped in it very easily which gets annoying.
As far as removing the console, there are 2 screws in the felt pocket that you have to remove. On automatics, remove the black bezel around the shifter. On manuals, pull down on the shift boot to release it from the knob, the unscrew the knob. Then gently pull/pry on the console starting at the back to release the retaining clips. Just go slow and be careful not to crack it.
