:sadwavey: Anyone have any tips or pics for properly alligning timing belt on the correct markings. i noticed that only the top two sprockets has tdc markings. But what about the the bottom one? Also, i tried cranking it before putting everything else back together and it only makes this whining noise....will a disconnected alternator cause this or what?

???????WHAT???????? You cranked the engine before making dead ass sure that the timing belt was perfect? Now, you may have engine damage if you were off more than a tooth.

When you had the timing belt cover off, the "key" should have been at the very top of the crankshaft when the cam gear marks are at their mark. If that crankshaft is turned to the left or right at all, then you have problems. If the crankshaft pulley is on and the timing cover is on, you can look down and line up the white mark on the crankshaft pulley to the pointer on the timing belt cover. You better hope you didn't tear anything up.

Left cam pulley meaning the passenger side right??? also, could the whining noise and not starting be because of the alternator being disconnected?

I had both cam pulleys alligned and i turned the crankshaft pulley by hand 10 times with the new belt installed to make sure it did not skip timing before bumping the key inside...although i have not reinstalled everything else yet... Should it crank once everything else is reinstalled.

Hey Diaz, I'm assuming by your post that the Legend engine is not "safe" in the event of timing belt failure? Meaning the valves do not have enough clearance to not impact the piston if the timing belt fails. I know some engines do, but do Legends? Hopefully they are for bob's sake.

Yeah the Legends are interference engines. It is not safe to even crank them until you're sure that everything is on mark. You can kiss the valves with the pistons.

Edit: I am sorry I actually told you the wrong order of installation. You MUST install the belt at the crank sprocket and tensioner pulley, then the left camshaft sprocket, and then the right (driver side) camshaft sprocket.

Also, if you started the engine without confirming timing mark alignment, you may have damaged your engine badly. You need to connect your alternator to start the car, hopefully you didn't do any damage.

The upper timing belt covers have windows to view timing marks, so you can check it from there.

im pretty sure i didnt damage anything because i didnt move anything i just slide one off and slide the other on.
Did you use anything to absolutely keep the cam sprockets from moving. If not they did.

Use Arnach's link. You have to do it in that order and exactly how it says to do it right. Also, it recommends for ease of installation that you advance the right cam sprocket 1/2 tooth. If you don't do that you'll probably end up one tooth off. It happens all of the time.

Here is a tip for timing the engine.
Remove the spark plugs! Set the drivers side cam pulley right on the timing mark, set the pass. side cam pulley on the timing mark then rotate the pully towards the engine about 1/2 of a tooth. Set the crankshaft right on the timing mark. Install the belt starting at the crankshaft then tensioner the pass. cam pulley ect.. Loosen the tensioner bolt to allow the tensioner to tighten the belt then tighten it back. Rotate the engine through 6 times and check the timing marks, they should be right on. Loosen the tensioner bolt again and retighten it.

I had trouble with this until I used the 1/2 tooth tip.

This is the correct method to installing a timing belt on a C32.

JetDoc, How did you keep the passenger side cam pulley from rotating? I'm having trouble keeping it on the mark it either wants to rotate left or rotate right past the mark. Should I reinstall the plugs?:dunno:

Hey everyone. I have a 92 Legend. My dad had the engine swapped maybe 6 years ago to a C32A1. I got into a crash back in December but as everyone knows Legends are built like tanks and it just ate up the little Mazda. I've been working on both BHG's and replacing all of the gaskets that were included in the Felpro head gasket kit. I finished up last night but when i tried to start her back up this is what i ran into.

Leaking oil- I think this was due to the driver side cam cover (hopefully)

Leaking Water- I was smart enough not to waste coolant. The water was leaking pretty bad out of the bottom driver side but I couldn't pinpoint the leak. I found a puddle of water when I uninstalled the intake manifold and sitting on top of the engine block between both heads was water. Any idea where its coming from?

Timing belt !!!! - I am really confused about the timing marks. When I'm ready to attempt another start up should the cam sprockets be on dead center with the marks on both the back covers. And the crankshaft pulley key mark should be where exactly upon start up. Should the key mark be pointing straight up or should it be pointing at the covers alignment thing?

UPON START UP WHERE SHOULD EVERYTHING BE POINTED TO?

And lastly the intake manifold gaskets should I apply some liquid gasket on top of the gaskets? The manual says its not necessary but when i was uninstalling the gaskets there was a lot of it on the gaskets.
