To paint or not to paint

I've just ordered some 17's and some clear corner and bumper lenses for my acura. The only thing I don't like about it is the paint job. Does anybody know the going rate for a nice clearcoat paintjob? Does Maaco really do an alright job? What are some other things i can trick out for not too much money.

No matter what shop you go to ask them what kind of clear coat they use. PPG and Dupont are the only thing that I would allow on my car. I'll have to think twice about any other brands.

PPG is what most dealership use. Dupont is more expensive and shine like a mofo. That's what I have on my car, I was able to compare the two cause everything on my car was painted by dupont then they used some new crap on my doors and I could definitly tell that it wasn't the same clear coat just by looking at it, anyways they repainted the doors and used dupont it on now.

i never know that you can just do a clear coat paint job. if so, how much is the going rate? my trunk and my top sunroof clear coat is peeling out now so i need to repaint that. my bumpers (both) are peeling (the paint and clear coat) so u can actually see the base. so basically i need to repaint the whole car
my G1s clear coat is falling off, chipping away, I know it's not the paint, it's the clear coat. Base paint still looks good. Oh yeah I have to stop saying the G1 is my car, it's really my parents' car now. hehe
A lot of places offer free estimates on the work you want to have done. The second thing to get is reccomendations on places that are good. Word of mouth is the best as far as I'm concerned. Ads in the yellow pages, TV, etc can promise you the world, but someone that has been to the particular shop and has had work done there can tell ya the true story. I'm sure there is someone in this forum that is in your area that can reccomend something.
Lastly, do a tour of the places, take advantage of the free estimates check out the millions of colors available, and go for it.

Good luck:)
Price for a repaint is dependent upon your location and the labor rate in your area. Estimate $2,000 - $2,500. You need to ask which parts will be removed and which just masked off. Labor is the key factor here.

While it has been many yrs since I used Dupont, the last time I did (on my Corvette) the paint (drk blue/silver) faded rather rapidly. Unless they have changed the formula, I would not use Dupont. I have had excellent results with Sikkens. I have even found Acme better than Dupont, but again it has been yrs since I used anything other than Sikkens.

A neighbor used Maaco to repaint (one-stage) an older Olds. Cost was under $1000. The three areas which needed repair (scratches down to metal) were visible after repaint. When they restripped the car, 4 fingernail marks in the fresh paint thru to the primer. Lots of overspray. Masking was only fair-good. But, what do you expect for $1000?? A good price if you were going to "wish the car down the road".

You might consider seeking an estimate from a CARSTAR shop if you have one in your area. They guarantee their work. The only other option is to ask your Acura, Lexus and BMW dealers who they would recommend and then seek estimates.
