i'm getting code 8 off my ECU but when checking my timing its lining up with a strobe, could this just be a sensor failing or is top dead that sensitive that it might be off just a hair?

That would explain why it takes a few seconds and sometimes a few trys to get it started, huh?The TDC sensor is only used during startup and can sometimes cause a no start if the sensor is completely dead. The only way to fix the code is to replace your distributor (junkyard is your best bet... throw on a new cap/rotor and you'll be good to go) as the TDC sensor cannot be replaced separately.
Timing with the engine running should be on because the crankshaft position sensor is providing accurate data.
