Transmission does not shift to 4th gear. Sometimes stuck in 2nd gear.

Any DIY, Transmission removal and tips, or to other things to inspect/change?

The most common cause for slipping is low fluid levels. Low fluid levels can create a number of problems, such as overheating and not enough hydraulic pressure being produced to engage gears.

I own 6 each first gen Legends (2 sedans + 4 coupes) with automatic transmissions. Your problem is most likely with the 2 sets of "shift solenoids" which are external to the transmission and are located under the air filter box on the transmission.

What happens is that if the transmission fluid is not changed every ~30K miles the steel wear metals which are suspended in the fluid are attracted to the solenoids which when energized become magnetic. The magnetized pintle/valve of the solenoid accumulates the wear metal and seizes, thereby causing sluggish or no shifting.

The fix is to remove the solenoids (easy after accessing via removal of air filter box) and using WD-40 with the red tube to blow the lubricant into the side oil port while delicately pushing on the end of the pintle with the butt end of a 3/16" drill bit to loosen the fine metal particles. The particles will be blown out by the WE-40 and the spring loaded pintle will then move freely; DO NOT DAMAGE THE PINTLE, it's delicate.
