Problem is that "tune up" is defined differently be each shop and different by how many miles are on the car. Most have pricing for 30k, 60k, & 90k and the service is different for each. So first you need to tell us how many miles you have on your car.

 

and whats been done to your car (by you or that you know of) since you've owned it

 

tune up on our cars consists of, but not limited too. spark plugs, fuel filter, air filter, pcv valve oil change=engine, trans, diff, coolant flush, myabe a TB cleaning, some on car injector cleaning (or atleast a put in tank cleaner, like seafoam) also a intake manifold cleaning like a seafoam is good.

most of this stuff you can do yourself.

 

i can do most of the stuff you listed. but how much would the pcv valve, diff , tb cleaning, intake manifold cleaning cost??
for teh differential, do i just ask them to clean it too?

 

Well, it has 136k miles on it. I just changed the Oil & Filter about 250 miles ago. The person i bought the car from had replaced the timing belt at 78k miles. I could probably use an Engine Coolant and Diff Fluid change. Brakes were done at around 134k. Spark Plugs were changed at 114k.

I just notice that i don't get the best mileage i went about 220 miles on around 16 Gallons. Just looking for the tune ups that will increase mileage, and keep my car from overheating(never has just want it to stay that way.)

I hate to possibly give you more bad news but FYI...the two big hitters on the 90k mile service are replacing the timing belt AND the water pump. It's an expensive job...and I've found quite a few Legends where the previous owner ONLY changed the TB and not the water pump. I would be most worried about that since a) it's an expensive job and b) you dont want to skimp on Legend cooling system repairs

find out about that water pump! I would not want to be driving on one that's 130k+ miles on it. A Legend that overheats is waaaay worse than a Legend getting under 15MPG

and you can def do a lot of the tuneup yourself...

 

i would do fuel filter change...run gas down to near empty, add Chevron Techron fuel cleaner additive with a full tank of premium gas. check the plugs, make sure they are NGK laser platinum or Iridiums..if they aren't change them STAT!

this should help you out....

 

What about O2 sensors? Do they make a difference in MPG? I doubt mine have been changed since car rolled off the showroom floor.

 

i think if you went to honda they would charge you a good 200-300$ for that kinda inspection and cleaning. i think is their A + B service.

you really can't tell if its good or bad by looking at it...but the part is like $30....worth it to change just for peace of mind

As many have already said you should consider:

1. Verify water pump has been replaced (I just bought a 98 civic that they changed the TB but didn't do the water pump and now it has a BHG and I'm the new owner).

2. Air filter
3. Fuel filter
4. PCV valve ($5)
5. Techron/Seafoam treatment via gas tank
6. Transmission fluid drain and refill
7. Differential fluid drain and refill
8. O2 sensors from Spark plug, Spark plug wire, spark plug gap, spark plug cross reference and ignition wires at Sparkplugs.com (NTK part # 24172)
9. Thermostat & coolant change

That should get you started on the right track.

 

Is there anyway you can tell if the water pump needs to be replaced? Visual inspection of the timing belt seems ok. Sometime mechanics place a sticker for worked done on the hood or engine compartment but i dont see any nor in the manual.

 

In the records it shows that the water pump was replaced at the same time as the Timing Belt and Drive belts, all at 78k miles. As for Spark Plugs, 6 NGK Platinum were put in at 114k.

well when i got my timing belt change with cam gear and all the other belts, it was $795. it was at a place that was in the pennysaver ads. and it was a big mistakes to go there. cause when i went to the honda and acura shop, they got asian people working theyre, and they told me they would of knock off $100 for what the other place charge.
they told me it was $60 an hour on labor. i would just buy the waterpump from the dealer for $185. they told me it will take about 5 hours to install. so 5 x 60 = 300 on labor plus the 185. = $485 total. that other place told me its $300 for waterpump. then i went to the honda and acrua shop, they told me a water pump cost 185. hmm obviously someone is trying to screw me over.
the other place i went to the penny saver, they charge $80 an hour on labor for changing the belts.
so 80 x 5 = $400. and plus the socalled $300 for the water pump. so total = $700.
which one you think i will go next time to change my waterpump? the $485 or the $700 , hahahaha
yeah, most of the asian shops will hook me up good just cause i am asian, hahaha. i aint going to the american shop again, nor the mexican shop. sad , but thats reality.
cause my cousin went to the mexican shop to see whats wrong with the signal lights, and they charge $75 to inspect it, then we went to some asian shop, the dude inspect it for free and told him what he needs.

 

The problem when a water pump is going bad is a) it leaks, and/or b) it gets noisy. A noisy water pump makes a racket at the front of the engine. The problem I have had is that water pump leaks. If you have a leak the first sign is often losing small amounts of coolant. You can have a shop do a radiator pressure test for about $20. Under pressure on mine there was a small dropping of antifreeze. It didn't happen at first. They ran the test for a few minutes before they found the leak. I had to replace the pump. It was only twenty some thousand miles since the last time it was replaced but its working again.

 

Aight, im buying some O2 sensors off of SparkPlugs.com and wanted to know which to get. There are Denso and NGK. Do i need to buy the OE or Universal? I think ill get NGK cuz its cheaper.

 

Get the NGK direct fit part # 24172, you don't want to be slicing those wires because of the extreme heat they are around.

 

I wouldn't bother with O2 sensors unless your fuel mileage is really sucky and you've tried everything else or the ECU is throwing check engine lights (CELs) for it.

I have 212k miles on my car and I've never replaced the O2 sensors yet I still get fabulous gas mileage (300 miles/tank mixed highway/city or 350+ on the highway alone.)

What's your fuel economy like? 21mpg mixed and 23+ highway only is the norm on an automatic sedan.

 

He said earlier he is only getting around 220 miles on 16 gals (about 14mpg)!

 

Yea i probably average 14-16 mpg driving at around a constant 30-45 mph in city (flat ground, no AC). Im a good driver, do everything to maximize MPG while driving. Done several Fuel Injector cleaners, run Shell V-power 93 octane.

I also notice that it runs a little rich out the tail pipe, rather rich gas smell.

 

Yeah, slap in some new NGK or Denso O2's. They can gradually deteriorate and not throw a code. I may have missed it, but have you replaced the air filter yet? The Napa Gold filters are good (Wix).
