Hey everyone, my dad's oldest car a 1985 Audi 5000, was purchased from my Uncle. My uncle had gotten the car from an Auction, he was told it was in the Police' possesion.

Now, interestingly enough, we've always had problems getting the car smoged because the VIN# was erased from where it should be, there is one on the driver's side door.. that's the one we're suppose to use. I ran a carfax on it and it came up clean, except for the fact Carfax started counting @ 88,000 miles on it. I went back to the car and opened the hood, and I saw the ORIGINAL VIN# engraved on the car's body.. I copied that # down exactly, and ran it through carfax... RECORD NOT FOUND.

Why would a VIN# be erased? Why would the police/dmv do this?
