Everytime I go to fill up the gas, I fill up, go pay and come back to my car, then check the oil. This gives it time to settle back into the crankcase. The car has to be turned off and has to be on a level surface. You take the dipstick out, wipe it off, and then re-insert it all the way. When you take it out, if the level is between the 2 lines, you are ok. If it is at the bottom, that means you are down a litre.

As for tranny, it should say in your manual, but I know the car has to be on and either in park or neutral.

Very True....especially with synthetic oil as it likes to stick to the metal surfaces better and it takes longer to settle.
