So I've come to a difficult possition. My 90 L Sedan's tranny gave up a few weeks ago. I've been waiting on an insurance check from when my 3G Accord was totalled out to make a decision on what to do. From what I've priced, I can get a used tranny put in for about a grand (labor + used tranny). Plus, the starter gave out (I think, the battery has a full charge, and the ignition still clicks the solenoids) so I have to have the car towed someplace and have everything done at once. So all in all, probalby $1500 put into a car that I really like a lot, but has over 160Kmiles, and an AT that I'm not happy with.

I have a tough decision to make.

I can give up the sucker for pennies (probably) to a salvage yard and buy a 91 CRX that's in good shape for $2000, or I can drop all that cash into my Legend. I'm leaning towards the legend, but need some input (a tranny rebuild is probably out of the question and a new tranny certainly is).

You can prolly get a rebuilt tranny for half of that but the CRX prolly has hidden problems that you dont know about. I would sitck with the car you like. And comparison shop on the tranny.

The CRX is fine...I've looked it up and down. Only problem with it is the body is rough in a few spots. A very good friend is willing to pass along a good deal (he's into hot rods & stuff).

The cheapest used tranny I've found is $550, and that's with a ton of miles. I guess I should look into rebuilt, too, but with the prices of used I'm kind of discouraged.

My opinion is to stay away from used, especially with anything over 60k. These autos are known to go bad often and you will be back in the shop in a short while. I made that mistake once and had to go back twice for replacement. Pay the difference (maybe $400) and get it rebuilt. Also, the honda is a nice car but you'll notice a big difference in luxury, comfort, and power. I think there's no comparison between the two. Just my opinion though, I hope it helps. Eli.

I feel your pain bro!

I don't have to replace my tranny (yet) but I do have a growing repair bill of equal value!

I've decided NOT to give up on my Legend. I still have new suspension waiting...a project I'd like to see complete, and many others to follow.

I'd keep the legend! my $.02

Put it into the Legend, after it's fixed and done you know it is sound. Th CRX or any other car for that matter could just lead into more probs down the road also. Shop around for the best deal we have a wealth of knowledgable people here to help you find good deals.

Just to give you a lil background, I had this choice before. My AC system went bad, ABS went bad, tires needed replacement, need new main relay, new battery. Those together total about $1500. The point is you know that those things are good for a good while. If you buy another used car, even if it is good now, those repairs haven't been done recently and they will need to be repeated. Keep your baby, or get a older car that you know you will have to baby also, or buy a newer baby. Just my .02

quick transmission question...a c27A1 transmission is a c27a11 transmission, so my ECU should work with any 2.7 G1 engine, regardless of the year or body style, right? I've heard comflicting info on the old board, but that doesn't make any sense to me. I ask because I found a complete JDM longblock + AT for under 1,000. I just don't want to have to find a new ECU on top of all of that.

im more curious as to what bishop ended up doing and if you did make the repairs, what the results were.

as far as keeping up a used car, id stick with my legend any day, rather than by another used car or a newer one.

even if my engine or tranny dies im in better shape replacing that than getting a new one for 15-20g's.

Well, I did buy the CRX, for what my buddy gave for it. I still have the Legend, but money's extra tight right now, so I put it up on eBay. I doubt it sells, but I don't have the money for the rest of the transmission work ( I replaced the shift solenoid). As mentioned in the "Finally!" thread, I wanted to give it to my fiance, but we're both poor college students. i cleaned up the legend and now I am thinking hard about keeping it.
But, as I said, the dall semseter is fast apporoaching and I'm strapped for cash. If anyone wants a really nice parts car, or a 90 L Sedan as a project, I'm asking 2 grand, and you can find it on eBay here

If the trash will help sell it, I'll gladdly go pick it up and throw it into the deal :)

FYI, the institution of higher learning that has nurtured me for three years so far is U of Kansas.
