So I'm driving home tonight, just cruising along at about 65, when out of nowhere my rear-view mirror falls off for no reason. Since I was close to home, I pretty much floored it and tore through my neighborhood. I got home and looked at the mirror and the winshield and the mirror has a chunk of winshield glass stuck to it - The winshield is missing a section of glass. What the hell? How does this work?

Sorry about the picture size, but does anyone know how to fix this without getting a new winshield? Also, how do I get glass off the back of the mirror?
Thanks

You need a new windshield. It looks like there was a bullseye in the center that caused the windshield to crack from the inside. Eventually the hole will spider (after several bumps or potholes) and crack across your windshield. In most states you would not pass inspection with a cracked windshield.

My rear view mirror also fell off a few weeks back. Luckily the windshield did not break.

I went to autozone and got some glue and just the stuck the rear view mirror back on. I guess in your case, since your winshield has a hole, I think you might have to change the whole thing!

I think State Farm will cover the windshield, so that's cool, but what kind of mirror should I get from Autozone? Do they have straight replacements?

I was driving my sister home one day and she gets in this hissy fit because I had to make a stop on the way instead of driving her directly home. I get tired of hearing here whining so I tell her to stop talking b/c I was not going to offer a free taxi service and then have to back track to where I was going when my 2 second stop was on route. She explodes at me (she is mentally unbalanced  ) and swats my rearview mirror right off the windshield!! I was SOO FURIOUS I couldn't speak!! the freakin' thing lands in my lap (with little parts all over the car) while I'm travelling 70mph in busy traffic on a 12 lane highway!

Anyways, I was lucky since nobody was hurt (actually my sister is lucky I couldn't take my hands off the wheel or I would have put them around her throat! (ok, I'm not serious but I wanted to!). I was also able to reassemble it (no parts broke) and its now as good as new.

I don't give her lifts anymore!

You should've snatched her nose right off her face and asked her how does that feel. :D :D she doesnt deserve a ride anywhere.

they should pay to replace the existing mirror back on to the new windshield....the glass shop would normally do this as a part of the windshield service...you don't need a new mirror....they will put the old one on as good as new....they use a special cyanoacrylate glue similar to super glue, but for windshields...they use a special remover to get it off the glass...you should be fine...

when mine was swatted off my car, there was a bracket that stayed on the glass, you could likely remove everything off the broken piece of glass except the little bracket, then try to separate the glass from the bracket (should this fail then the only thing you have to replace is the bracket that is stuck to the broken glass and not the whole mirror).

Good luck!
